software to gain more gigs???

ok i have heard of a software that can increase the amount of gigs in a harddrive i know it sounds odd but alot of us are prolly bother when we buy a 250 hd and end up with 230 after formating
 
drive compression can do that for you. Obviously there's a trade off: performance for size.
 
ya windows (that is, if you are using windows) compression will give you a couple (not sure of exact ratio here) gigs but as drizzt81 said, you do take a small performance hit.
