A friend found a dual slot1 motherboard at the dump. Currently, I've only got one cpu for it (p3 450), 128mb of pc133 ram, and three harddrives to choose from: 160gb wdse, 80gb wdse, and 80gb seagate..
now i understand the motherboard probably is only ata33, so i plan on using some maxtor ide on pci that I found (i'm assuming this has to be faster than ata33..).
So I'm going to be putting linux 2.6 on it (fedora core), and using the 80gb wdse would require that i break apart a raid0 config on my main box. But in doing that, I'd be able to get a 2x80 software raid0 going on the server. It's not anything I'd be worried about for mission critical stuff so I don't need to reliability necessarily so raid0 is good enough. But my question is.. with a p3 450 (and potentially moving to 2x p3 450), what is the cpu overhead going to be like for linux software raid? would it even be worth it? i plan on serving a bunch of files at once over the lan (server will be heavily used in the dorm).
Because if it's not even realistically beneficial, I might just go with the 160gb and not have to break apart the raid0 on my main computer.
