The actual title of this news item should read “eBay idiot gets caught” but I guess we’ll just have to do with “U.S. man jailed for selling pirated software.” Calling this guy a “pirate” is a compliment.

Smith acknowledged that he had purchased counterfeit copies of Rockwell Automation factory-management software through eBay, then duplicated it and resold it to other eBay users, the DOJ said. Between March 6 and May 26, 2004, Smith received $4,149.97 for selling the counterfeited software in 32 auctions, the DOJ said.

Sounds like he is going to become a [H]ardware pirate in jail, if ya know what I mean. ;)

Now if they would only go after the websites selling movies and crap pirated and perhaps going down to china towns and doing some busts.

Where did the other $695,850.03 come from?

The article says he sold over $700,000 in pirated software. Then says he sold 32 copies of the Rockwell Automation for a total of $4,149.97, that leaves a large chunk of money unacounted for.

That is barely anything compared to the grand total so he must have been saleing a lot of other software too. Wonder why they didn't mention anything about it.

Maybe he bought his software and burner hardware from CompUSA or BestBuy? lol :D

The software was worth over $700,000 but he only got $4,149.97 in the auctions...he sold it for less than it was worth (if it were legit)...

Ok, that makes a little more sense. I guess I misunderstood the article. I thought that when it said that he sold $700,000 worth of software that was how much he made, not what the actual software was worth if purchased legally.

That is one hell of a discount selling software that would cost about $21,875 for about $129.65

What a waste, all that for for $4,000 ish. You have a better chance of making more by selling yourself.
