Software mode/RAMDAC correllation?

I know that your gfx card doesn't render in software mode but does the RAMDAC on the gfx card still do the work for digital to analogue or is that done by the processor using some sort of emulation?

thats the RAMDAC's sole purpose. I mean it stands for Random Access Memory Digital to Analog Converter. It converts the digital signals in the card to analog going out to be displayed on the monitor.
 
I know that but the latter part of my question has yet to be addressed. The important part, is it emulated if you are in software mode by processor DAC? Is this even a possibility?

I dont know 100%. But I mean the CPU obvioulsy does all the work for the graphics end of it when rendering in software, but it still gets sent to the vid card for being displayed. When its sent to the card its in digital so I would almost bet the DAC is still doing its thing, just that the card itself is not rendering the actuall graphics just passing the info the CPU sent to it out to the monitor.
 
Of course of course, now that you mention it that makes perfect sense.

I doubt it is possible to emulate a DAC or they'd of done it by now and saved lots of money. Considering you would still have to have an Analogue device to transmit the analogue signal if you some how got the cpu to put out analogue transmitable signals.

Thanks for lending me a few brain cells, I couldn't do simple algebra earlier lol, so I'm sort of fried I think.

it's not emulated and it's not possible to emulate one .. well you could build a circuit that outputs analog signals but that would justbe another ramdac :)
 
W1zzy, is that C-format in your sig (looks like it)? I have done C++ and VB but that format is a bit odd to me, maybe you're too old school for me though.
