Software Mirroring Recovery Win 2003

I have a Windows 2003 server that was using software mirroring. The server's system drive and one of the mirrored drives failed. One of the mirrored drives is readable. I took another Windows 2003 server and I installed the drive in it. I expected to be able to select the option "Import a Foreign Drive". However, the import foreign drive is grayed out. The only options available are: "Convert to basic" and "Reactivate".

Since this drive was never part of this server, I do not understand why it is offering reactivate as an option. I would be very grateful for any help.

Any reason you can't just boot to that drive in the original server, then mirror replacement drives with it? I don't know the answer to your question, sorry.

The mirrorred drive was a data volume not a system volume. It has no OS on it.
 
No guarantee, but it would seem you need to try reactivate:

But I have never done anything like this, so don't blame me if it doesn't work.

If you have the time (and the data is important enough) create another data mirror on another box, then try moving one of the drives to the running server and reacivate it (with test data) then you will know what it will do.

Yeah, you have to reactivate it.

After that, break the mirror and create a new software mirror with that data disk and another one.

Dynamic disks are a pain. Use "hardware" whenever possible.
 
Thanks, I'll try that. I am also going to switch to a hardware raid controller. I never knew what a pain dynamic disks are. A network "guru" at work suggested using them. If I had know I could have gotten a $50 Adaptec 1200A and had none of these hassles I would have jumped at it. Live and learn.

I really appreciate the information I've gotten here. Perhaps I will be able to return the favor. Being a database guy, my hardware skills are pretty minimal. But you never know.
