Software for editing video clips?

I have an XVID file made from a DVD and I need to convert small parts of that XVID into WMV so I can use it in powerpoint.

Any free/super cheap software that has basic editing and conversion?

OS is Server 2008 x64.

I tried tmpgenc xpress 4 but the audio is messed up and I have no idea how to fix it.

Windows Movie Maker/Windows Media Encoder?

At the risk of sounding stupid... How do I get that under server 2008?

Server 2008 should already have the Windows Media Services in it, including the encoder. It's not installed by default, but it's in there. This should help:

Thanks for the help Joe Average and Snowknight26. It turns out that I had enabled Windows Media Services already but all I needed to go was download Windows Movie Maker 2.6 for Vista (I was stupid and didn't realize it was up for download).

Windows Movie Maker worked much better than tmpgenc xpress, and my project turned out well enough. I'm pleased.
