One question when converting does it look crappier in the tube then watching it on my monitor, does it degrade the quality?

Depends on the resolution/quality you have converted to.

Well i would like to keep it as the original. Can i bump up the quality is that possible?

you can use ffdshow to sharpen the dvd and/or mpg file, makes it looks better. Check out the HTPC forums here for some more info.
