I'm told that when my company purchased 25 licenses to Office 2003, that they came with Software Assurance, and that means Office 2007 would be free for us. Does anyone know how I go about obtaining these Office 2007 licenses? Would I go back to the reseller for them, or straight to Microsoft? Or, since I have to buy 10 additional licenses now, and I know I would get one cd key, am I covered to install that on 35 computers?
 
Depending on how you got SA (via openvalue, etc) you should have been given an agreement number and information to login at http://licensing.microsoft.com. There you can obtain software assigned to your license agreement via download and new keys to Office 2007. Software assurance gives you the right to update to the most recent version (or downgrade to a previous version) for the number of licenses you have purchased.

Typically MS works with resellers, you'll probably want to contact your reseller and ask for your MS agreement number and information. Microsoft licensing may be of help too, if your vendor isn't being helpful. Once you have that, create a passport account and login to the ms licensing website. There you should see a place where you can enter your agreement numbers on the bar on the left.

Usually, if you purchase SA through an agreement, you have to logon to the site to get your keys though. I haven't heard of SA outside of an open value/enterprise licensing agreement though, but of course that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Additionally, if you have an agreement number, purchase the 10 new licenses under that existing number. I don't think its required, but you won't have to sign a bunch of agreement documents again.
 
I believe I have an agreement number under the eOpen section. Would that be the same thing you are referring to?
 
Yup, that's exactly what you need. You may want to check through your documents and see if someone already created an account that they linked to the agreement number. I don't think two accounts can be linked to the same master agreement unless they are authorized by the primary account.

One way to find out is to create a passport account and see if you can attach the agreement to it, if it won't let you contact your vendor (or, Microsoft may have a contact number on the licensing website) and see if you can get the agreement number removed from the old account. I had this happen at my last company when the old IT manager left, he had the agreement attached to his home account. It wasn't difficult but I think you had to fax some information to prove you are a representative of the company though, again, your vendor may have an easier way of doing this for you since you probably already have an established relationship.
 
Apparently, I need to RTFM a little more. I went through some old e-mails my boss saves from the previous IT Director, and they had the info I needed. I am now downloading our Office 2007 version from the eOpen site. Thanks for the info!
