Software and decoder for HD videos

hey guys, whats the best player and decoder to play H.264 encoded videos?

I use PowerDVD Ultra for watching HD-DVD movies although it can play H.264 encoded as well. It is a bit expensive ($100) so you may want to shop around.

If you are looking for x.264 you just need the codec and player, both of which will be free. The K-Lite codec pack and media player classic work very well for this.

Are you going to be playing actual H.264 or x.264? (Sorry if you meant H.264 I see them used interchangeably)

Power DVD is terrible in it's current state. It can't play any ripped HD DVDs/BDs. I had begun archiving my HD DVD collection and have ripped about 700gigs of data and now they decide to remove the feature Hopefully someone else will step up to the plate and make a better HDM player. For videos VLC works well and it's free

VLC is ok, but the klite codec pack blows.

PowerDVD still works fine for playing HD DVD's and BR movies off the hard drive, you just have to have it in the form of an ISO now and mount it with Daemon Tools or the like. There are dozens of people emailing Cyberlink asking for refunds now, so expect them to put the option back in for the next update so it will work in non-iso format.

You can try it out if you want. See what is best for you. It certainly is the most 'efficiency to quality' rated codec out there that I know of. That means it will take up less CPU usage and still yield a pretty good picture. You can also try ffdshow for the best results, but it will eat up considerably more CPU power and some of your movies might lag.

If you do not install the latest update for PowerDVD, you will still have the ability to use HD on your computer. Avoid it like the plague.

I also use K-Lite in conjunction with PDVD and am very satisfied with the output.

I use Zoomplayer since it works very well with a mouse IMO. It has a ton of options which is both good and bad.

MPC + CoreAVC/ffdshow + AC3filter has worked great for me for 720p/1080p h.264 videos.

hmm doesn't ffdshow decodes audio already? y do u still need ac3filter?

btw is there anyway to install MPC? i wont want to open the player and browse for the file instead of just clicking on the file to launch MPC on default

ffdshow does do audio, but for some audio tracks it doesn't work for some reason.. at least for me. I need both ffdshow and ac3filter installed.

But you don't need to install MPC. It is just there and it works. If you want your movies to just double click and open in it, setup your file associations in the files types in the control panel.

Another MPC+CoreAVC+ffdshow person here. I do use Sonic Audio decoder for HD-DVD/BD playback in MPC, PowerDVD didn't work for me.

I even get DD5.1/DTS tracks sent to my receiver in that format for it to decode, so the cool "multichannel decoding" light goes on
