Softmod?

softmodding is when you change the way something operates by either software change or by changing/updating the BIOS.

a 9800Pro has 8 pixel pipelines. a 9800SE has 4 pixel pipelines. with the right 9800SE, such as the power color C3 model, and using the omega ATI drivers, you can softmod the SE into a Pro by opening the other 4 pipelines.

how hard is this to do on a scale from one to ten? also, if you don't mind answerin or pointing me in the direction of an answer, what exactly are pixel pipelines and geometry pipes. Why would the pipelines be closed in the cheaper version? And, lastly what is it that makes it so that you need a specific model to softmod something rather than being able to do it with any model?

on a scale of one to ten, with one being easy and ten being difficult, softmodding is about a three.

Of course, if the softmod doesn't work, the three can turn into an eight very quickly :)
