SocketA Sempron 2800+ Temp Too High?

My SocketA Sempron 2800+ with stock cooling seems to be running hot. Currently it's running at 2000MHz in a room with an ambient temperature of 23C and MBM 5 is reporting 60C idle and 66C under load. In summer the temperature can regularly go up to 70C+ load.

Any suggestions on how to lower temps a bit without having to spend a fortune if necessary?

60-66c is ok for those cpu's, they have a very high thermal tolerance and run hotter than the Athlon 64's of today. There might be an issue if its getting above 70c though as you said, you might wanna check the usual (dust, fan rpm, heatsink seating, etc) and if all is ok there are several cheap cooling solutions out there.

I have never sold a Semperon 2800+ that runs at 60c.

That really seems insanly hot. I would suggest removing the thermal compound and putting Artic silver on it.

Also is it hot enough that you can't hold the heatsink while in operation?

It doesn't seem hot when I touch the heatsink. I fiddled with MBM 5 and it appears that it is reporting 2 temps for the cpu, the 2nd temp is almost 10C lower than the 1st. I'll try putting some Arctic Silver on an see how it goes.

How is your airflow? I think the temp sensors may be CPU & Ambient ( case) temp. What mobo do you have?

I think they may be internal diode, and socket thermister :), and of coarse the diode being the right one :p

I think the airflow in my case is shockingly low. The front intake doesn't lead to the outside of the case so i just have 1 80mm fan blowing the hot air away from all my cards and have opened the top two drive bays. I think my 120mm exhaust fan is not up to scratch either. It's an old 15V (run at 12V) die cast metal Panaflo and it tends to just bounce air off the mesh and creates a back pressure that I can feel when I stick my hand infront of it.

MB is a Gigabyte GA-7N400L although it just has GA-7N400 printed on it.

Vcore seems fine, it's currently hovering around 1.640V

The GA boards read high... seen this plenty of times over at the AMD forum, the GA guys even admited they read high...

Unless I totally forgot what a Sempron is spec'ed for stock cpu voltage....1.64v is WAY HIGH.........that would account for the seriously hot temps you got going on....

I have never seen a Sempron run that hot in a properly setup rig...

Vcore is set as low as it can go - 1.640V.

At the moment I'm thinking that the tempertaures are being read incorrectly. I just touched the heatsink as close to the base as possible and it wasn't even hot, actually it only feels slightly warm so I'm not too worried.

Edit: According to Wiki the SocketA Semprons 2200+ through 2800+ are designed to run at 1.6V Vcore
