Socket Choice

I'm planning to build and I've decided to go with Intel. I've read some on both intel and amd and it seems that Intel is kickings amds butt... right?

So my question to you is what cpu socket type should I go with? I can't spend a fortune on a mobo but I'd like to get something that I dont have to upgrade in less than a year. Im looking at a few mobos with socket LGA 775 at the moment... any suggestions?

If you want to go Intel, you'll want 775...it's all they've been making for a while, though there's no guarentee that and given 775 processor will work with any given 775 mobo. If you can tell us your budget and what you're planning on doing with the machine, I'm sure the forum can guide you to a good purchase.

It depends on your needs. There is no way to say if you will have to upgrade within a year. What do you currently have? I have a P4 3.2 prescott and I still haven't upgraded because I don't really need to.

There are others that upgrade their systems every time a new processor comes out. What do you do with your pc? What do you need it to do? Do you want to be able to play every game at 1680x1050 for the next year at full detail?

You need to give more info. What is your budget?

Sorry I should have provided more info.

Id really like to keep my processor under 175... and I plan on gaming mostly. I hope thats enough money to satisfy what I want.

what it includes?
will you be overclocking?
do you need raid?
do you need SLI/Crossfire?
how many SATA ports do you need?

Intel's LGA 775 is EOL'd at the end of 2008 where LGA 1208 (I think, not sure) will be replacing it. Core 2 is to be suceeded by Nehalem at that time.

AMD's AM2 is said to support everything up to bulldozer with a certainty, but i suspect bulldozer will require a new socket --If it doesn't AMD's really in trouble. K11 needs to be something new.

Yes, Intel is kicking AMD's butt period.

LGA 775 is really the only choice right now.

There's the server socket (LGA771) which you don't want... the mobos use more expensive ram thats slower.

Then there's the older s478 which you definitely don't want (old Pentium 4's only).

Socket M which is the mobile socket.... which doesn't make sense (processors cost too much).

And then there's the ultra old s370 socket, which would make no sense either.

So back to what I was saying there's ONLY one REAL choice right now.

Now in a few months down the road, there will I believe be 2 new choices for Nehalem. LGA1366 = high end w/ tri-channel ram and an LGA1160 mainstream & low end with dual-channel ram. I believe at first there will ony be LGA 1366 available and high to mid-high range chips. So its probably not worth the wait.

Just get yourself a P35 motherboard, 4Gb of ddr2 800-1000 ram, and one of the following processors: e7200 (cheap), e8400, q6600 or q9450 and overclock it to its max, a 9800GTX for $199, and you're set for 2-3 years.
