I was wondering, are socket AM2 and 939 physically the same? In other words, will a 939 processor fit into an AM2 socket and vice versa? I have been an intel guy for a long time and was just curious. Thanks in advance for your help.

Socket 939 is not compatible with AM2 or greater.

No. Socket 939 is 939 pins and socket AM2 is 940 pins.

And AM3 is 938 but AM3 processors can go in AM2+ sockets but definitely not 939.

This is one reason why 939 processors go for ridiculous prices online ($150 and above for dual core versions that are less then 1/2 the performance of a current Phenom dual core that sells for $65).

I think the cpu cooler is compatible for 939 and AM2 but not 100% sure on this.

sadly not, am2+ mobo has 4 holes in mobo, 939 has 2.
939 uses a clip farther appart as well

edit- even if they physically could fit, the 939 still only has a ddr memory controller

I have never used these holes for any AMD processor (I have dozens of 940, 939, AM2,AM3 here at work) although I admit they are generally used for high end cooling. I avoided needing to remove the mobo to install a new HS/fan.

Now that may be a problem but it depends on the HS.

yes, big difference, the HSFs should work between them(heck my socket 754 HS fits on my AM2 rig(though i dont want it on it :p)), however both of which are "dead" sockets, no new revisions, AM2+ on the other hand is receiving AM3 support officially(yes, AM3 CPUs will run on AM2, just not officially and it is luck of the draw with getting a working combo from what ive read)

Also Socket 939 uses DDR Ram and Socket AM2 uses DDR 2 Ram and I think AM3 Can use DDR 2 or 3 (Depends on the motherboard)

I can confirm that all STOCK socket 754/939/AM2/AM3 coolers can fit on each others brackets. I've owned all those, and have switched the coolers around and used them for other peoples builds.

Ive had them all also and I couldn't get my coolers to go from one to the other. not without slightly different brackets.

Yes, the heatsinks fit. From socket 754 to socket am3 the clip distance is the same. Only the mounting holes for the bracket are different ( 2 holes vs. 4 holes)
and no , socket 939 cpu dont fit physically in am2 sockets.
