Socket AM2 Question

They're both socket AM2, so you should be fine. The only real incompatibility I know of is some boards not being able to handle the 125 watt X2s. Stay away from those (and it looks like you are) and you won't have any trouble.

Other than in multitasking, you may not notice that much difference, though, as I think you're moving from 1.8Ghz to 2.2Ghz on the same architecture. As long as you can swing the $45 or so there, consider this for a little more, and you'll notice a much larger difference:

It has an unlocked multiplier, so even your pet dog can overclock it. I assume you'll be overclocking, since you're asking the [H] forum. :)

You can't change the multiplier on a Dell, so overclocking would be a no-go for him either way. Still a pretty good CPU, although the LE-1620 is a better deal IMO(only 200MHz slower, but same amount of cache and only 45W of power consumption for a much lower price).

Problem is, the LE-1620 is a single core.

Oh man, I completely missed that. I thought it was a dual-core. Definitely not a good option in that case, the 4200+ or 5000+ would be much better choices.

Well the 1.8 GHz 3400+ Sempron runs fine; I'm just turning this into a HTPC because it's insanely quiet. I can't tell if it's on or not =p.

It has problems playing 1080p movies... it's very very laggy and when it's able to play the video and sound don't sync; CPU goes to 100% hehe. So, I was looking to just upgrade the CPU to allow me to play this content. No gaming or anything heh.

I'd pick something of this list.
Prices from $48 to $87 depending on how much you want to spend, all 65nm, 65 and 45 watt models, 2.2GHz to 2.8GHz.

If what you want to do is watch HD video, even the upgraded processor may not guarentee you good success. A lot of that depends upon the video card. If it has to offload everything to the processor, even one of the better models suggested may still get you lag. I'm not saying it certainly will, but it seems kinda risky to me.

Consider a video card upgrade which can handle the HD playback without offloading everything on the processor.
