Socket A Heatsinks - Which is Best?

It seems that i might be re-doing my friends case here around christmas time, and we need a good socket A cooling solution. When i say good, i mean it has to be able to handle taking a barton core xp to somewhere between 2.2 and 2.5 quietly...so no tornados allowed. He's all up on the bling factor so he'll probably want a LED or UV fan so i need a good enough heatsink to compensate for that. I figure since he's not sure if he'll want to overclock at all right now a SLK-900A with said 80mm LED fan would probably be appropriate, but i don't want it to be the bottleneck if he gets antsy...what do you guys suggest?

i should mention the board also, and right now it looks like the DFI NFII Ultra Infinity...
 
i got a lapped slk-800 with a 80mm enermax running at 2400 rpm.. never goes past 109F(i like ~100 load) i would say its doing somewhere in the range of 23 cfm.. cant hear it at all.. i like not being able to hear my pc :D :cool:
 
If you want the coolness factor in several ways (looks and functionality) Give this one a try. I picked one up for a friend at CompUSA for 23.99. It never went over 93 degrees Farenheit for me while I was burning in a Barton core 2500+ @ 3200+ specs w/ 1.850 Vcore. That is quite good actually, I think since my Koolance was running at 85 degrees under full load. Bear in mind this factors in ambient room temp. Check it out below:

Unfortunately the clip on this is sometimes difficult to attach to the socket at times, but once it's on it's on good. and it comes with some nice accessories.
 
the Zalman heatsinks are definitely quiet, and i have a 2600m and i comfortably had my cpu up to 2.5 at just about 100F idle.
FYI, i have that same mobo but the lan party ed.

turbines are not and never will be quiet i find the zalman 7000 CNPS alcu noiser then my system.. when my friend would bring his p4 over i would yell at him for not turning it down..
 
so the zalmans will fit on that board? that makes me feel a lot better...because it looks like space is quite limited from the pictures
 
I like the newer fans too from Thermalright, I was mentioning the Jet 7+ due to the TCO factor here. I had forgotten to mention that the fan was on low until I cranked it up one day to test it out. Inside a case if you use sound deadening foam it helps some. Though, you are right, turbine fans at this time are not very quiet. I should mention though that at 22cfm compared to the 39 avg for most it's not too bad in comparison for db of noise. I haven't really researched for goodies but cheapies yet though. just saw this as a good price considering that when they first came out they were 39-45 bucks... :rolleyes:
 
every 3 db added onto noise= twice the sound.. so 20 db to 29 db would be 8 times as loud
 
yeah...i'm quite weary of noise after living with two tornados for a few months...worst purchase ever...lol
 
Can't say I blame you on the noise. I just purchased some goodie but cheap fans (pctoys) from koolerguys.com since they're like 10mi from me. These fans are friggin LOUD they push 52cfm max, but sound like a friggin lear jet at full speed. fortunately for me i've no fan's running at this time unless my temp hits 45C in my Koolance. I swapped the standard fans out with these for more cfms and wanted leds too for the coolness factor. kinda hard to sleep with these fans at full throttle if your comp is in your room. :(

hahaha noooo. 3db is the minimum amount of difference that the human ear can detect. it's double the POWER, not double the noise.

if you were right then any thermaltake heatsinks rated at about 50db would be as loud as a 747 on takeoff since those vantec stealths are like 20db
 
i wish i could maintain a relevant level of cooling with a different heatsink, but right now as it sits on my board the tornados are 92mm and with both sinks in place the fans butt against each other, so any of the zalman 7000's would need serious mods to fit...even then the fan blades might still touch...however the DFI board looks like it'll be more forgiving if placed in a mid/full tower case...i know in the lanboy a large heatsink would contact the power supply...
 
they do seem to be nearly identical...wierd...

while it's on my mind, i'm gonna hijack my own thread, and ask this question...what is the best northbridge cooler out there? i see the swiftech highly rated and the Northpole as well, but the northpole will not fit on my GA-7DPXDW...i'm hoping the swiftech can be coerced into fitting...the center to center of the mounting holes are within the values specified by swiftech but they aren't at the corners of the heatsink...they are down the sides a little bit...about 0.4in and i'm not sure the swiftech bracket goes down that far...the bases are exactly the same dimensions as stock and it would be a VERY tight fit with the SLK-900A's but i think it'll squeeze in...also, the 762 northbridge has a heatspreader on it...very odd i think...never seen one like that before...

From what I read the SI-97 suffers some when used with the supplied shim. Other then that the ALX is mostly meant as a "budget cooler" so I wouldn't really expect to see many comparisons to it's larger siblings, they're not really in the same class you know.

Northbridge there are a couple. Swiftech, Northpole and Thermalright also has one. I believe they're all with the same performance range, I wouldn't really know though. I am thinking of getting Thermalright's cooler (I like how it looks, lol) and try running it passively on my NF2 board but it's not something I've given much thought too.
 
Another cooler you might want to look at is Scythe Kamakaze 2 which does a good job as well as works with pretty much any CPU out there.

That's unfortunate, because the heatsink itself is quite good. The good thing is that alternative shims are available:

I have two of the above on my dual Athlon system. The price at FrozenCPU is a bit high (they were cheaper at 2cooltek while it was still in business), but I feel that the composite type is the best version out there. (Though whether the cost of SI-97 + shim versus the cost of an SP-97 or an SLK-947U alone is worth it is certainly debatable.)
 
What I don't understand is why it suffers with the shim (never thought that a shim could affect temps). I don't think switching the stock one out for another shim would actually fix anything versus just not using it. I might be forced to get one if I can't find an ALX (everywhere I look everyone is sold out) so I'll have to see for myself how it is without the shim.
 
The purpose of the shim is to keep the heatsink stable; without the shim, there's nothing to support the heatsink except for the CPU die itself, so if the system gets jostled, there could be a risk of chipping the die. If the shim isn't designed to the right spec., i.e. it comes up higher than the level of the die, it would interfere with proper contact between the heatsink and the die == bad cooling performance, or at worst case dead chip. That's why I like the composite shims, they are firm but not totally incompressible.
 
the MSI must have alot more room than my gigabyte...because with my SLK-900A's the 92mm fans actually butt up against each other when mounted...i had to slide them one way or the other to fit...
 
well, not too long ago i recieved a response from swiftech's tech support and they beilieve the MCX159 should fit on the board...i'll have to give it a shot...if nothing else i'll just pawn it off on a friend or something...lol
