Good morning; I'm silencing my computer and the Zalman flower cooler I have currently has an arm brack that attaches the fan to the video card. I've never liked this hassle of an arrangement, and now it's not fitting with the new silent heatpipe video card cooler I purchsaed. So, I'm looking at getting a traditional-attachment cooler. I have an Abit NF7S v2.0 motherboard, and was wondering if this cooler will fit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16835118112 I've seen some reviews on Newegg that have said there is a capacitor in the way, and that you have to remove it and re-solder it somewhere else. This is out of the question for me.

If this HSF will not fit, is there anything similar on the market that is still available somewhere in the U.S. that you would recommend?

Actually, just found this which looks even better: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106056

Edit: Dang, not in stock of course. I ended up going with this cooler which was in-stock and ~$8 cheaper anyway: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16835183111 I am going to try to run this fanless, but not worries if it doesn't work because I have an extra 80mm Antec tri-cool fan that makes zero noise on lowest setting that I can add onto it. I'll report back on temps; currently I'm running around 55C idle.

55*C idle on a 2500+? I don't recall my temps on my old setup, but that seems very high to me.

Those temps seem a bit high to me also.

I run an ABIT NF7-S v2 also. I have an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ (Tbred), native 1466MHz, running at 2340MHz (10.5x221) w a Thermalright SP-97 air-cooler, using a 92mm 3-blade Delta fan (70CFM??).:D

My idle cpu temp, using MBM5, is about 47-48 DegC. My load temps are about 52 DegC. This is in a 25.6 DegC room (78 DegF).

They are a bit higher than I would like, but that is with the chip OC'd to 2.4. I have only one 80mm case fan in my ghetto case pushing low CFM for low noise production (plus 2 80mm PSU fans that are low CFM) and bad cable management, so that definitely contributes. :D

That one you listed in your second post will work fine... I wouldn't run it fanless though..

And 55c at idle, even OC to 2.4.... that seems about right for one of those stupid zalman flower coolers.... yep.. I had one in an old socket-A system... they don't work very well at all.

Get good air flow and cable management in your case and you should see temps drop quite a bit.

The Aerocool took a bit of work to assemble. You have to unscrew the wacky base-heatsink from the base, install the socket retainer clip, then screw the heatsink back to the base. When I did this, I found that one of the screw-holes was fairly stripped and almost worthless. I kept turning the screw anyway, and amazingly I forced the two pieces together hard enough that it finally "caught" and firmly attached the retainer clip assembly to the base of the heatsink.

The gold plating is really cheap-looking, and it seems like it would not be effective at letting heat escape. On the other hand, it is so smooth that it seems like dust could not possibly stick to it. But, the heatsink material itself looks really cheap compared to the aluminum/copper Zalman. Actually mounting the heatsink to the socket was fairly easy, and the heatsink, even with fan attached, only feels about 50% heavier than the much smaller Zalman flower I had on previously. The fan is not "silent" by any means at stock speed, but is not loud either. However, I used the potentiometer from my Zalman to slow the stock Aerocooler fan down by quite a bit and it's now virtually silent.

After running the system with the side panel on for several hours, the heatsink got very warm to the touch (not scalding but warm). This proves to me that it is firmly connected to the CPU, and the heatpipes are conducting heat up to the fins and dissapating it. I haven't checked temps yet. I also installed a silent VGA cooler, and my system crashes after half an hour of gaming, so I think I may have to check the seating on the VGA cooler because the CPU temps seem good. I'll take more accurate readings tonight with MBM5. Overall, I would suggest this CPU cooler to anyone looking for a quiet, effective Socket-A cooler, as there are few left out there nowadays.
