The time is drawing near to upgrade my system...

My question I am proposing:

Which Dual core socket 939?
(EDIT... I have decided that I will upgrade, so I wont be keeping my 3700 San Diego)

which processor? which core? opteron or X2?
If so, I'd be looking at something reasonable... like an opteron 170 or comparable X2... not an FX-60.

Any advice is appreciated!

EDIT: If you are just going to say something along the lines of "Why upgrade?" or "Save your money", please save your time and refrain from posting... I upgrade because I want to... not because I have to. I enjoy playing with new technology and seeing what it does... its a hobby. Everyone has hobbies, just because mine differ from yours does not mean that they are wrong or unjust.

In my opinion, it depends on your useage of the system. As a gamer, I'd say grab another GTX with that money and go SLI. Your proc isn't holding you back, so that won't be an issue. Otherwise, if you're looking for just general system performance, grab an 4400 X2 or 175.

well, I kinda do both, game and shoot for performance...

I also know that many of the upcoming games will utilize dual core... thats my reason for leaning towards an upgrade. (I am eager for ET:QW).

Well then I suppose it's still up in the air. Yes the dual cores are showing improvements in games now, but it's nowhere near the performance benefit that a second GTX will give you. Then again, perhaps the everyday performance will make you happier than the strictly gaming performance.

Again, tough decision

at this point i dont see any reason to have x2 because there isnt any game that is dependant on 2 CPU\'s. other then Serious Sam 2 that i know of. UTK07 will be optimized for dual coring so u might go that way. duals are for multytasking in my best view. i dont see a point to getting them, thats just my opinion.

P.S. I also made a post for an upgrade in the video card section... ;) I get one last big upgrade before going a year without... but noone has responded.

Its not the idea that they are wholy dependant on 2 CPUs... its the idea that better performance will come out of 2 CPUs in game... As I said... I am awaiting ET:QW which (rumored) will support dual core utilization.

Why exactly do you need to upgrade? It seems with that system you should be able to play just about anything. Heck, I'm getting ready to move from my Intel in the sig to pretty much that exact same thing. I guess you should move to FX-60 and another GTX if you're just "hurting" that bad with your current system.

I never said I was "hurting" for performance.

I should have made the same little disclaimer here as I did in my other thread about the vid card upgrade....

I upgrade because I want to. I overclock because its a hobby... Therefore, when I find that the system I am running is no longer able to be modified or tweaked, I get bored, and want new components to doddle and play with... But thanks for your comment...

Wasn't there also a Quake 4 patch that supports multiple processors? Aside from that - if you want a new dual-core to fiddle with, then why not? You've got the money - you're interested - and I'm sure it would make everything else you do with the computer better (Provided it's overclocked to match or at least get close) or similar performance-wise. You could go for another video card but were I to recommend a dual-core I'd probably say Opteron since I've heard good things about them. The force is strong with those ones.

I am not sure about the q4 patch, I will look into that.

I have also read the same things about the opterons... but what exactly is the difference between, say a 175 opteron and a 4400+ Toledo? Both are similar clock speeds stock (i think) and both have 2x 1MB L2's...

Yeah the X2 4400+ and 175 are both clocked at 2.2GHz - but from what I've heard, a 175 Opteron is likely to overclock quite nicely in comparison to the X2, although personally you probably wouldn't have many issues with the X2 either. I'd go for the Opteron but I guess we'd need an AMD expert in here for this.

I vote for Opteron 175 - probably because my lack of knowledge predicts better overclocking depending on the model. Wooh.

Normally the plus for Opterons is that they all have the 2x 1MB of cache. But with the X2 4400+, we're talking a considerable price gap too. It might be better to just go with the X2 and save money, depending on how well someone can tell us the Opteron will overclock in comparison. When we talk in comparison to price/performance - $100CAD seems like a far stretch for me. Even if I don't get as much performance out of the machine, I'd almost rather have the $100, but that's just me. The X2 4400+ is already a good processor taken by itself and it's dual-core.

Note: Sorry I can't truly be of more help, I guess all I'm doing is confusing both of us now. :(

lol, you are bringing some good points to me...

I need to find where my price/performance ratio stops... I can completely see where you come from.

right now the 4400 toledo is $464 at newegg. Whereas the 175 opteron is $513... which is only about 50 USD... but I guess i need to research a ton more in order to see if the $50 is going to warrant me a better overclock... and if its worth it.

I wish more people were into PCmark just as much as they are into 3Dmark... I guess I could gauge performance by the CPU score in 3dmark06... but if $50 means the difference between an overclock of 2.5GHz and 2.8GHz, I think that its well spent... but if its between a 2.75GHz and 2.8GHz, I dont think the $1/MHz is worth it.

haha... I guess I did contradict myself there, I think I was still in the frame of mind from my video card upgrade post... I guess you can say I have already made up my mind, but its a matter of what to upgrade to.

Ok... I will edit the above... I am wanting to upgrade at some point in the near future... I guess I should have made it say "Go X2 or Go Opteron?"...

Anyways...

So I did a little digging around the 3dmark06 thread... and was looking at comparable benchmarks between the opteron dual cores and X2 dual cores... What I noticed: more people have opterons, and are clocking them higher.

I dont know if this is attributed to the X2 owners not wanting to push their CPUs, or if its because the X2's don't clock as high.

The first 8 opterons I saw clocked an avg of about ~2.65GHz Whereas the first 7 X2's (including 3800's) saw ~2.45GHz... The 175 is looking promising.
