I'm planning a major upgrade here in the next little while and thought I'd solicit some information/opinions from ya'll.

You can see where I'm starting from in my sig... not pretty.

I read an article over on Xbit Labs about the Sempron 3100+ Socket 754 w/the new Palermo core and it overclocks like a Banshee. I'm leery about using Socket 754 however due to the limited upgrade path vs. Socket 939.

1) Does anyone know if/when AMD plans on releasing the Sempron on Socket 939?

2) Would you rather run an overclocked Sempron 3100+ on Socket 754 or an A64 3000+ on Socket 939?

for the time being, there are no known plas for sempron on s939. i don't think there ever will be.

i would personally get a 3200+ clawhammer for s754. if you don't forsee upgrading cpu's within the next two years, there's no real reason to get 939 over 754. M2 will be replacing both in late '06 into '07.
 
...at least that makes my decision a little bit easier. I'd hate to jump into 754 right now and have the same processor available on 939 in two weeks.

The Sempron 3100+ w/the Palermo core appealed to me mostly because of its bang for the buck, assuming the overclocking numbers are accurate. Quite a bit less expensive than any of the A64 counterparts w/superior performance in what I'll be doing most of the time (games and internet).

Get a venice core'd 939 chip.

they look to be very good overclockers. you should be able to hit some high speed with a 3000+
 
...the Venice core is an option. But are they available??

Considering that Palermo is heavily based off of Winchester, I would be very wary of their overclocking abilities- just because a few review sites have them running at 2.4+GHz with ease, don't forget how many similar reports there were of Winnies before they started crapping out at 2.2.
 
Just get a cheap A64 at this point. It will perform better stock and have 64 bit support and 4 times the cache. I got a used 2800 for $90 that does 2.6.
 
4 times the cache? Don't Sempr0nz have 256k and most A64s (the cheap ones) 512k?

Pricing out my system was interesting... NForce4 S939 mobo + PCI-E video card (6600) + Athlon64 3000+ ends up being EIGHT DOLLARS MORE than NForce3 S754 mobo + AGP video card (6600) + Semp0rn 3100+. Kinda kills my original argument w/r/t budget.
 
And socket 939 gaurantees upgradability to dual core. M2 may or may not happen depending on what AMD decides to do, I know eventually they will abandon 939, but its not like intel is making anything to compete with it currently. Eclipse is just a socket 754 nazi. ;)
 
Right arm on the dual core... I think that may have shoved me over the edge. Sorry Nazi.

Then again, I could pick up a Sempr0n 2200+ on Socket A and still be miles ahead of my current setup.
