I have a friend who has a single core amd 3500.
I have a 4800 x2 toledo. he's on xp pro. Will he need to reload windows if we swap cpu's?
Can we make it work without reloading windows?

I believe you can do the swap just fine, however he might have to reactivate windows because of the change in hardware.

Xp Pro supports up to four CPUs natively I believe. You'll be fine.

+1. I'm pretty sure I had to re-activate windows (XP) back when I went from an Athlon 4000+ to an FX55 (small jump, I know, but it was free :p). So no biggie, just put in the key again and you'll be good to go :).

swapping CPU shouldnt warrent a reactivation....as long as the rest of your system is the same

I'm pretty sure it will require a reactivation. If memory serves me, when I upgraded from my A64 3200+ to my X2 4600+ I needed to reactivate, but I could be wrong.

The key is tied to the motherboard, so you can reactivate it without any issues. The hardware hash they use when activating takes into account almost all the system hardware and any major change will require a reactivation.

You'll need to update the "HAL", or the processor driver. Your moving from a single core to a dual core, so it needs to be changed. Update it before you swap over. You shouldn't have any issues with windows if this is all your doing.

I've done a similar upgrade myself, and it's no big deal.
After replacing the CPU there might be a need to run a "repair" on the OS, followed by reactivation.
The reactivation is absolutely no fuzz if it is more than 18 months since the last activation of that license.
Only OEM licenses are tied to the motherboard, and then only by legal means. Technically it's possible to move the license between computers, but MS doesn't allow it.

Cheers

If we repair the install will he lose any of his programs? This is the main issue. He wants to keep all his stuff he's downloaded. ( I guess it's downloaded stuff)

I never had to do a repair install when I switched my single core to dual core (years ago). I'd do the swap, reboot, then see if problems arise, at which point you can start troubleshooting.
