A friend has an older socket 775 MB which supports 800MHz FSB CPU's
Which of the following would be the best upgrade from a Celeron D 331?
A Pentium 4 631 or a Pentium D 915
Please do not suggest a Conroe
No need for a new MB, CPU and Ram

Go with a 915, hell go with a 925 or a 930 or 940 if ya can afford it. As you can see in my sig I'm running a 925 @ 4.02 GHZ for everyday use :D The D series has gotten cheap..... 935 Presler is only 95 @ newegg.com atm.
 
sorry for this, but the e4300 has a 800 mhz FSB

does his mobo have the right VRM stuff for supporting conroe?, just saying not all conroes/allendales are 1066 mhz fsb or up

if thats not an option, 915D
 
older 775 boards typically do not support C2D processors. that being said go with a 915D, on my old rig it ran 4.0ghz without a sweat with a thermalright xp90. i could have pushed it farther, but just never tried.
 
An old LGA775 board might not even support Pentium D CPUs. On PCI-Express type Intel chipsets, you need a 945 or higher chipset to support Pentium Ds CPUs. The 915/925 chipsets are not compatible with Pentium D. A few older 8xx series AGP type chipsets support Pentium D and even Core2 (848, 865, 875P) if they have BIOS and VRM support.

If it's a non-Intel chipset board, you'll need to post more information.
