socket 754 to 939

All right people, I've got a bit of a problem.
Last week, i ordered a pc with an amd 64 3000+ (newcastle). I thought i had ordered the 939 flavor but i mistakenly discovered last night when i got the thing up and running that i had ordered the 754.

i've contacted the store i ordered it from to see how we can rectify the situation and he said that it'll cost about 70 bucks extra (including the upgraded cpu, mboard and shipping) to get me a new 939 based system. i'm assuming the hd and cdrom and ram will be moved over to the new mboard.

now my question for everyone here is, is this a worthwhile move? it'll take maybe 2 weeks to get me a new system, will the performance gain be worthwhile? how about future upgradability? i understand that ALL new AMD cpu's will be of a 939 flavor (excepting the server chipsets, right? so it seems like future upgradability is limited, right? if i keep the system i currently have, i'm limited to a 3400+ newcastle right?

lemme know what you all think, i'm curious. time away from my new baby is not a concern, it's all about performance gain and future expandability.

thanks alot.
mike

Performance gain? Negligable. A 3400+ is a 3400+ is a 3400+ Yes it might run at a different MHZ, or have a different amount of cache, or be one socket or another, but in all reality, they all perform fairly close to each other. (thus the same PR number) Overclockability might be affected by which CPU you get, but since you are ordering a system and not parts, I assume this doesn't matter to you. (do you even know what MB the system will use?)

Future upgradabiltiy? Significant. Socket 754 is dead, long live Socket 939. Oh there will be semptrons and the like made for the old socket, but no dual core etc. like 939 will get.

So it really is up to you.

okay, so i just read a bunch of threads on socket 754 vs. 939.

in my case, because i won't be able to upgrade until late 2007 at the very earliest, i guess it makes sense to stick with the 754 i currently have, yes? by late 2007 when i look to upgrade, 939 will have been replaced by something completely different right? so my reasoning about wanting 939 to be upgradable in the future is a moot point yes? and if i choose to upgrade my 754 processor in the mean time, prices will probably be dropping on those things, right?

jesus this is hard..

mike

one other thing. anybody here start their 3d gaming with the 3dfx voodoo add-in board? I did, and wow. i haven't owned my own computer since 1995 or 1996, the computer i added the 3dfx. when i loaded up doom3 last night (i got a 6600gt as well) holy cow was i blown away. i mean, video game graphics have come a loooooong way. i'm running at nearly 70 fps wiht all the bells and whistles (well, no 4x aa) turned on! outstanding!

i addressed this a bit in another post, but when i look to upgrade in late 2007 or early 2008, 939 will be somewhat dead right? i mean, i'm hearing about m1 or whatever right?

thanks ALOT

By 2007 we might be looking to VIA for CPU's Intel or AMD may have gone bankrupt. (all unlikely)

but yes, by then you would be better off replacing the MB even if it is with one with the same socket.. Because the MB is important in any upgrade, and usually is what I base the rest of my parts on.

754 aint dead! dont ever say it is! were getting all the mobile chips. im betting venice will have a crappy set of weeks, just like winny did and newark will be doing just fine, cause its most likely a speed binned san diego. 754 aint dead, not by a long shot. im gonna say that on a newark 2.8ghz on air will be rather common.

well, almost every venice i've seen oc'ed thus far got to 2.8ghz on air.. while they may have cherry picked samples.. the fact is there ;)

that out of the way, s754 definitly isn't dead. if you don't plan on upgrading for a while, it really doesn't matter which way you go, but s754 cpu's are still a bit cheaper, and so are the boards.
plus, there are nf4 based s754 boards for all the pci-e lovers out there.

decided to stick wiht the 754. gonna upgrade processor whenever something worthwhile (and affordable) comes around. is it true that the only processors in development is sempron? what's this i hear about dual processor 754? i assume a mother board with two processor slots is necessary?

mike

dual core 754 will probably come in the form of 'taylor', which is two turions put together ;)

I wouldn't worry about it at all to be perfectly honest. Performance wise, you're not missing anything. In all reality, the 1.8GHz clock of the 3000+ in 939 is actually slower than 2.0GHz of 754, check the benches. Also, if you toss a good enough AGP card in there (6800GT or example), you won't need to upgrade for AWHILE. And seriously, what are the chances of you buying a CPU and swapping it out yourself if you're ordering a system and not building?

All this 754 dead talk is just from people looking for a reason to backup their 939 purchase ;) Sure there are no plans, but it's been said DTR (desktop replacement....aka laptop) chips will have dual core, and DTR is socket 754....so dual core socket 754's could very well exist. But reguardless, future proofing is something that CANNOT be done with computers....2007? Everything we have now will be slow by then. :p Quit worrying....the Price:performance ratio is better on socekt 754 as it is.

Point being: Friends of mine who want to upgrade and want the most for their money, I tell them socket 754. The only real advantage of socekt 939 is support for the FX series of processors.

/end 754 fan-boy rant :D

hmm..isn't teh venice coming to 754 too? I heard this somewhere...

no, because venice is the codename for the 512kb, dual channel revE core ;)
you might be thinking of newark, the s754 varient of san diego.

i couldn't agree more.

Well U get more for the buck right now w 754. But if U have to spend somewhere between 1k and 2k U might do itn the 939 way cause the marginal costs are offset by the future possibilities. But If Ure on a budget or upgrading a system get the 754.

754 Rigs are greast if you use a Sempron (Budget) or Mobile (High perf) CPU. the standard Newcastles overclock OK, but not to the levels of the Winchesters on 939 or the Mobile Clawhammers available for 754.

SInce you got a 3000+. I would say the $70 upgrade would be worth it.

the regular newcastle 2800+s oc just fine. i have a 700mhz overclock on mine right now. and it was a breeze getting there. the new 90nm mobiles are gonna be even better, cause take the 90nm sempron and make it a64 compatable and mpobile, and viola, you have newark/turion!

I like my 3400+ CG Claw personally ;) Idunno, I've gotten to like my 1MB cache.

my rigs being a jerk to me, it locks up when a cd is in the cd drive bay. if i take it out, i can run anything, and my aquamark scores are way lower too. i useda get like 63k all oced, today, i go to run it, and i get 43k oced and then instability occured. damn chaintech, if this board is faulty, they will never hear the end!

Chaintech isn't exactly the company you wanna use for a motherboard if you're going to overclock...and a solid PSU is needed to. My 73k score isn't bad, but the [H]ard|ARC makes it feel slow...but I have yet to see any other socket 754 scores so I guess it's not TOO bad. And 73K is tapped out too, with the claw STRETCHING to 2.5GHz with like 1.8v or something lmfao. Totally not prime stable at all. :p

the chaintech vnf3-250 was one of the best 754 ocing mobos out there, thats why i got it. my psu is pretty rock stable. my old kv8-pro would do 63k with ease! now its hard to get this thing to even boot right. i think i mighta installed the ide driver wrong. im gonna go try some things and report back. damn freakin rig, taking away my nice vacation day

And I am looking forward to that Lovely KV8-pro that should be on my front door step as we speak. :_)

perfectly happy wiht the 754. i mean, doom 3 looks awesome! and older games like max payne 2 run like a dream. i see no reason to upgrade at this point.

I'm in the same boat, I agree with what you have just said but my 3400+ CO clawhammer is well over a year old I'm itching for a change. Its not a excellent clocker 2400mhz prime stable 24h. 2500mhz superPi 32M. Max OC 2600mhz.
I want to play with something else...

i'll bet your cpu loves cold. i know i can normally barely do 2.4-2.45ghz, but if i bring down the temps in the room to ~10c, i can do superpi 1m at 2.62ghz

damn (cf). what do you get for time at a 1m superpi at 2.62? im gonna make a suicide run soon for 2.7ghz. ill try to do super pi at that speed.

34s

i have a screen just under my memory controller limitation, with the cpu at 2587, but i also got 34s at 2628mhz after clocking the ram down, but i don't have a screen of it. :(
though i do have a screen at the max of my cpu with the core ~20c, superpi gives errors unless i back down a bit

super pi errors suck. i useda get those when id super push my cpu. now i can hang with the big boys and no errors! booya! i love you nforce 3!

The CG Mobile Clahammers are awesome.....
SuperPi.JPG

(PS: Its for sale too)

im waiting for the newark mobiles. imagine your claw mobile, in 90nm, with a lower TDP. thats what im waiting for :D

OK.. I guess I'm the super-mild OC'er here. My CH CG 3400 is only at 2.4 stock.. it can hit almost 2.5 on stock v but starts to become unstable there.

As far as obsolescence of the s754 goes, I would say it is....

except for one word...Oakville

erm, oakville is the mobile winchester for s754, which as been out and about since.. december or so. that's not oakville that you linked too
you might mean newark, the mobile san diego core that will be replacing the mobile clawhammers. ;)

there's a winchester for 754? under a diff. name?? wut? anyone sale these??

Oops you're right my bad... My brain apparently did a unscheduled time-warp.. :p

yes. as previously stated but incorrectly linked to, the ULV mobile's for 754 are made with single channel winchester parts, better known as oakville.
same basic specs, but 1.35v, and single channel
and there are like.. 2 stores that i've seen sell them, neither very well known, nor is it very affordable. i'd forget about it and focus on newark instead.

edit: it's cool, it happens to me all the time too :( :D

curious, cause a new chip was launched for s754 just two weeks ago, the 3700+ mobile. i have one on the way ;)

edit: i see. i was being silly, but either way, 754 will exist in the form of mobile cpu's :D

So...754 is officially scheduled for termination now.

Um... no......

Palermo, Turion, Newark, Georgetown, and Albany are all 754........

(ANd probobly Roma as well, but no specs other than low power mobile sempron have been release.... AMD has said that sempron will remail 754 though)

And...you just rattled off a bunch of Sempron/Mobile revisions, which the page says is the last man standing. Quoth "Socket 754 platform is kept for Sempron only" therefore any Sempron revisions (including Roma) will live. Anything that's not Sempron, dies.

you're still ignoring that mobile athlon64 ;)

If there's any non-Sempron mobiles...I have no clue...it said only Sempron, but I'm pretty sure all of the mobiles are Semprons or revisions of it under other names...
