Socket 7 question

It depends on whether or not the motherboard supports dual voltages. The PentiumMMX CPU's required two different voltages. Another thing it depends on is whether or not the BIOS would allow a CPU with a ID string other than GenuineIntel to post (this was a common headache back in the Socket7 days with several brands of CPU's sharing the same platform).
Theoretically you could go as high as a K6-2 400. This would be with the multiplier set at 2X and the FSB at 66mhz (K6 series remaps the 2x to 6x). Now if your FSB can go as high as 100mhz, you could go as high as a K6-2 550.
Another option is to use a adapter from www.powerleap.com. This will let you overcome the hardware limitations of your motherboard if there are any. But the BIOS limitations will still be present if any are present.

Not necessarily. It depends on what the manufacturer of the motherboard used for a BIOS. If it's an Intel board, more than likely it will only boot with the ID string of GenuineIntel. Also, will it support more than one voltage for the CPU? If not, your stuck at a non-MMX Pentium CPU..166mhz tops.
Goto PowerLeaps website. They have a extensive database on what Socket7 boards will support the AMD K6 series of CPU's.
EDIT...I guess they did away with thier database, but now instead have a online utility that will check your system out and tell you if it will work or not. That means that the old bugger needs to be up and running and connected to the internet.
