Ive got a Quad Socket 603 Server (Engineering Sample) and I was looking at some processor...I can get a really good deal (In Hot Deals section) on Socket 604 Processors, but will 603 work?

It has one more pin that 604 right?

Most xeon motherboards say 603/604.. but if it truely is only 603, it may not work.

Also be aware there are Xeon DP and Xeon MP.. the DP is the cheaper one and supports up to dual processor.. the MP supports more (8 I think) and to run all 4 you would need Xeon MP processors.

Good to know! Thank you for the information!

Bad part is that it is an engineering sample, and so thier is no documentation for it what so ever. All I know is on the socket it is marked '603 Socket'.

Yep, more than 2 CPUs requires the MP (multiprocessor) vs DP (dual processor) versions. Just to give you an idea....clock for the clock the MPs are about 6 times as expensive as the DPs (so if a DP is $500....)

My best advice is to buy the cheapest socket 604 chip that you can find. I am talking 1.6GHz or whatnot. Plug it in and make sure the board even works. Then go out and get two good chips, sell off the old chip and your all set.

no, socket 604. It should fit. 603 just did not use that pin. best to ask in the SMP forum though.

the 604th pin appeared on the 533 FSB chips, it is functionally useless beyond the fact it prevents you from inserting a 533FSB Xeon in to a 400mhz FSB S603 board.
Since the Xeon MP's have yet to support the 533 bus, the Quad board has no reason to use the S604.

If you really wanted too, since it's an ES and multiplier unlocked you might be able to use it a S603/400mhz board by well, cutting off the 604th pin (pin AE 30) and adjust the multiplier. Of course i have no idea what multipliers your board supports, or if it would even allow you to set them manually.
