Ok I've scoured around trying to find a clean cut answer but I can not so....
I have a pair of socket 603 Xeons. They use a FSB of 400 MHz and are either 2.4 or 2.8 GHz (not sure off the top of my head). I am looking to at the possibility of using them in a newer motherboard that has PCI Express 4x slots and if at all possible PCI-X slots. I have a PCI Express 4x SATA raid controller that I am using currently and would like to continue using it. The system will basically be a file server.
I have looked around and it looks like the only difference between socket 603 & 604 is that the 604 introduces a dead pin to lock the 533 FSB processors out of 603 motherboards forcing you to upgrade the motherboard. What I can not find is any real mention of if a socket 603 CPU will run in a new socket 604 MB. Most of the motherboards I am looking at have a FSB of 800 MHz and the FSB bios options in the online manuals are well... not even mentioned. Other than the proudly touted 800 MHz compatibility I can not find the info I am looking for.
