Hey all,
My mom has a toshiba laptop-( which she hates)
Ne ways it has a Pentium 4 Northwood processor running at 2.5ghz.(socket 478)

She wants me to build her a desktop and i think that i could use the processor out of the laptop, and make her a desktop.

My question is what motherboard should i get her to buld this.

Thanks all

Pentium D 8xx is only around $100 and D930 is only around $150 performs way better than P4 Northwood. Just sell your mom's on eBay and get a new better system for free (money you get from selling the laptop will be more than you pay for the new system).

I'm with poster above. Sell desktop & buy new parts. They'd be hella faster & better.

you MIGHT be able to use that processor, IF its not a soldered in to the motherboard

I agree with the other posters, if the laptop is working sell it on eBay. If it is not working (screen damaged etc.) then you should be able to scavenge a few parts. I've seen a number of 2.5ghz P4's pulled from Toshibas listed on ebay so you should be able to yank it. You may also be able salvage the hard drive and stick it in an HD enclosure or Media enclosure.

I recently upgrade an old P2-400 system with a Socket 478 Matsonic board from geeks.com that sold new for $29. It's a no frills mobo from a company that is no longer manufacturing mobo's. I used a 1.7 cel and 512MB from an HP system with blown capacitors.
