socket 478 pentium-m

Can you drop these in any pentium-4 socket478 board ? Do you need a special board?

I've seen a lot of links for adapters that do 478->479, but if you have a native socket478 pentium-m (many are sold at newegg, and also mentioned
here)
can you just pop it into any socket478 board?

No you can't drop a Pentium M into a desktop P4 socket. But funny you mention it I just recieved yesterday (as of 2005-04-19) my Asus CT-479 with a Celeron M 340 riding it. It's pretty snappy considering the CPU specs (1.5Ghz, 512KB L2, 400Mhz FSB) It nips at the heels of my brothers P4 2.8C in a lot of games.

What board are you running it on? I thought those converters were only for a certain type of Asus board. Just wondering if it'll work on my IC7-Max 3 board.

Asus P4P800-SE

They also support the P4P800-VM and at least one of the P4C800's. Asus should support all their 875 and 865 boards eventually.

btw, did You try to overclock it?

those new cm's (350J,360J and 370) seem to be nice chips, with 1M cache,
the same stepping as 533MHz dothans and higher mult than low-speed pm's.
plus they're quite affordable (at least, for intel)

yours is banias, right?

Yeah mine is a Banias core, picked it up for $40.00 shipped. The BIOS is still a bit unpolished. Being a Banias core I couldn't get much out of it, 125Mhz FSB (125x15=1875Mhz). I can get it to 2Ghz but it's just a bit unstable. Though I've quite a few Banias hit 2Ghz stable. At 1.87Ghz though it beats my brother's P4 2.8C in gaming, and I have a "lemon" of a lowend Celeron M. :p

Those new 350J,360J, and 370s look pretty sweet markku. I think these Celeron M's would make great budget gaming chips if Asus keeps supplying the adapters and boards. I bet 2.5Ghz wouldn't be unreasonable for a Celeron M 370J and it would be pretty fast to boot.
 
It can be done, as I have done it my self. The only problem is that the multipler is locked at 12x with a 100Mhz FSB. The chip I tried it on was a P4 M 1.6Ghz. I ran the FSB up to around 185 and could boot into windows with no problems. There are several articles on the net outlining how this works.

it's a pentium 4 M not pentium M
they have completely different architecture and pinout...
