There are motherboards out there that are saying, well on newegg it says Socket 478 CPU Type: Intel Pentium 4 Prescott/Celeron....there are none that say P4 Northwood, but will it work anyway? Shouldn't any socket 478 fit and work? Or am I missing something.

ok um get a mobo for 478 that can support presscott it should be able to work with northwood

Most socket 478 boards currently@ Newegg will work with 533FSB, 800FSB processors either Celeron, Northwood, Prescott.

Sure Northwood will work.

Which Northwood do you have?

I'm pretty sure it's 400fsb, it's not mine or i'd look...2.4ghz northwood 400mhz fsb.

Northwood, 400MHz FSB, 512KB L2 Cache 2.4GHz .

If it is that one Phranq , then that requires an older 845 chipset, not avalible @the Egg

Any speed where both a 400Mhz FSB and 533Mhz FSB CPU overlap, the 533Mhz FSB

CPU gets a B after the speed so that the 2.4Ghz Northwood CPUs come in 2.4 and 2.4B varieties.

If it's a Northwood 533Mhz FSB or " 2.4B " : then you can use, just for an example, a

spec sheet from the 865PE chipsets avalible @ Newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131484#DetailSpecs

Clear as mud right :p

I think the 2.4a is a prescott, because i have a 2.8a prescott.

You're right on there Peach. The 2.4A and 2.8A GHz are Prescott Core, @ 533MHz FSB.

So what is a 2.4 nothwood at 400FSB? Friggin Intel and their screwy naming scheme.

yeah 1.6a - 2.0a (are Northwoods with 400FSB)

But 2.4a & 2.8a are 533FSB Prescotts.

2.4b & 2.8b's are Northwoods with 533FSB

2.4C, 2.6C, 2.8C, 3.0C, 3.2C, 3.4C are all Northwoods with 800FSB & HT

2.8E, 3.0E, 3.2E, 3.4E are Prescott with 800FSB & HT

2.66, 2.53 are Northwoods 533FSB

3.06Ghz are usually Northoods with 533FSB and HT, but I've seen SL specs posted for a Prescott version though I've never seen one.
