On my 2.8E Prescott, I'm getting idle temps of between 54c-57c and load temps peaking at 69c running Quake III.

There isn't much more I can do in the way of airflow other than cut the side case shield and installing a 3rd fan which won't help all that much. So... I'm looking into getting a quality heatsink/fan combo that will mount without modifying the mobo and doesn't weigh 14 pounds.

Can you recommend some specific HS/fan models that would mount to the 478 socket and cool this beast down a bit? I'm new to the cooling world but this hotty needs some assistance.

Thanks.

I don't think you can use the stock heatsink adapter with the Thermalright X-120. It requires removing it and installing a backplate (on the MB) to hold it in place.

My concern was the same as yours (same CPU) as I wanted to use the stock heatsink connection method. I went with the Thermalright SLK-947U and a 92mm Panaflo fan. It weighs just over 1 pound and uses the stock connection method (or the backplate method, your choice). Also look at the SLK-948U. It's a little heavier than the 947,but can still use stock connecting methods.

Hope that helps.
