so i have an intel d850gb motheboard and 1.7ghz cpu.. i can't take this cpu and stick it in another board, can i? basically it has rdram, and i am thinking i could buy a new motherboard that is ddr, throw in the spare 512mb ddr stick i have and be set.. but then i looked up the specs on the motherboard and saw it was socket 423

so is socket 423 just wierd thing that only supports rdram and that's really it?

Yeah, I think s423 was replaced with s478 during Intel's RDRAM phase. It wasn't until after s478 was introduced that RDRAM was replaced with DDR-SDRAM.

You can get a socket 423 board that runs pc133 if you wanted. By the time you did that though you would be better just replacing the chip. Mind you this is not that bad of an idea. You can get a faster celeron new for like 40 bucks.

yeah, i see that you posted in both my topics swatbat..

i guess for now, i am using this as a fileserver only.. XP is running on that 128mb of ram.. its not worth it for me to buy more ram, because i could spend that money on a motherboard. i don't think there would be an advantage to skt 423 / pc133 though.. that would more than likely drop me down to a board that doesn't support more than 136gb on a hard drive..

i am going to buy a large IDE drive drop it in there and call it a day.. or just build a whole new computer.. in a large case.. and put all my drives in it...

A personal file server doesn't need any more than 128mb of RAM anyway in most cases.

Consider buying used rdram off the forums?
