Hey all,
My main folding rig just bit it this morning, and I'm not sure I'll be able to rescue it. But I do have a Sabertooth X79 handy, but no chip for it. What are a couple of good overclocking chips for a socket 2011 board?

Oh- it's going to be watercooled with 2x 240 rads...
 
need to do bios update if you are not going to use old sandy bridge cpu
 
There are only 7 overclocking chips for the 2011 socket:

i7 3820, 3930k, 3960x, 3970x, 4820k, 4930k, and 4960x.

Which one depends on what you need to do with your computer.
 
The Sabertooth is up to date, and I'm on the wrong coast for Microcenter. Probably have to Amazon/Egg it, unless I score something on the FS/FT board here.

Thanks on the i7 info, I was surprised how little I googled earlier (hence this thread). I'm hoping to get something that will kick some Folding@Home crunching, but the machine is also used to game sometimes. I'll dig through the specs later and see what has the most FaH powah...
 
In terms of CPU power, the numbers are fairly self explanatory as for which ones are faster (within the same generation). Same generation meaning 3xxx or 4xxx series. The higher the number, the faster they are.

3970x and 4960x will be the most powerful chips for F@H. Which one of those two is faster depends on your luck of the draw when overclocking, though the 4960x will use less power. The 3960x has lower IPC (instructions per clock, meaning that at the same clock speed the 4960x will be faster) but generally overclocks higher than the 4960x. These are 6-core 12-thread CPUs at a cost of $1000+.

3930k and 4930k are also 6-core 12-thread CPUs with slightly less L3 cache. As such, they are only slightly behind the X models. They also have a much lower price, around $550-650. Overclocking, IPC, and power consumption is the same as above.

The 3820 and 4820k are the weakest of the 2011 lineup being quad-core 8-thread parts. I doubt you will be interested in these.
 
Wow- great breakdown! Thank you for it, and I have to ask; crazy knowledgeable overclocker, or is there a site I should be reading?
 
I just follow tech news mostly. I'm frequently on Overclock.net and Hardforum. Hardforum in particular does reviews of new hardware that come out, so just reading those as well as just reading threads in general gives you a very good knowledge of recent hardware.
 
Roger that- I guess I was not paying attention during the short 2011 window because I was not even close to building a system...
