Well, here's the deal. I'm looking to build a new rig as it is time I upgraded. My Q6600 is just old and it's time.

I plan on getting an ASUS Rampage IV Extreme and a 3930K CPU. I have everything ready to order but I just can't decide on what would be an adequate air cooling solution. ThermalRight has always been my 'goto' for cooling since my AMD 2800+ Barton back in the day. Though there are a plethora of good CPU coolers out now and I know the R4E has the X-Socket feature.

I've seen reviews on CoolerMaster's TPC 812 and that is what I really want to go with but it isn't available on any of the websites I've gone to and I can't find a retail release date. I've thought about going with a ThermalRight Venomous X, as I know it is a good cooler and have installed it in a couple of rigs I have built for friends but will it be good enough for a 2011? Will a 1366 cooler block my memory slots? And so on... all questions I research when building a rig and choosing parts to make sure everything fits when I get it. :)

I've been poking around looking at reviews of the R4E but none of them really highlight what CPU cooler was used and why or how it fit on the board as far as blocking slots/connectors etc...

Guess what I'm asking is what do people recommend for an air cooling solution on a 2011 CPU? I just care about performance, cost doesn't matter.
 
I have considered the Silver Arrow, and while it performs well the fans are not aesthetically pleasing at all. I'd honestly prefer something with 120mm fan configuration so I have more options for fan selection. Not to mention the weight of the Silver Arrow is just shy of 2.5LBS. To me that's a lot of weight to be hanging off a mobo that wont be running in a test bench setup. I know it wont break anything but over time that kind of strain concerns me, especially with heating up and cooling down over years of use. It also looks like it might interfere with the memory slots on an R4E if I had anything larger than a standard heat spreader on them.

Like I said ThermalRight is my general goto but it doesn't have to be a ThermalRight cooler. I guess you could say I'm looking for something that performs well and wont interfere with the memory slots on the R4E.
 
NH-D14 SE2011 is kicking ass for me my 4.6GHZ overclcok. Usually run around 70 under prime 95 load! Just check ram compatability on the noctua site.

The weight of HS's is nothing to the retention pressure used by the HS's, it's nothing for the mobo, the weight is also with the two large fans. Heat spreaders are also useless and there are allot of great choices of RAM that don't have those over sized plates/fins on them. And looks well, you said performance only, looks are about taste and in that case only you can pick a HS. The fans that come with the SA are also some of the better large fans out there.
 
Yeah I've really been considering the NH-D14 SE2011 and just switching out the hideous fans (which somehow add 340g/.75lbs to the weight of the heatsink). Seems like it's what everyone has to have for CPU air cooling rigs. Really wish it came with black fans though, I could handle that. As far as color scheme goes those will need to be replaced.

Oh and if some of you were wondering the new rig will be:

Asus Rampage IV Extreme
Intel 3930K
Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB)

Going to keep using the same PSU and add on another 6950 for xfire. Should be pretty nice when it's all said an done.

Well, after a lot of thought and some research I've ultimately decided to go with a Corsair H100 for my cooler. With the CM Trooper case I'll be using I will be able to run 4x120mm fans on the radiator with no problem and I wont have to worry about weight or a cooler getting in the way of my DIMMs.
