Socket 1155 - will Intel launch 6 core CPUs?

Is it safe to assume Intel will launch 6 within a year for Socket 1155 (or maybe even 8 core CPUs in 2 years)?

It is alarming how quick Intel change sockets. This combined with their crippling (e.g. no QPI on Sandybridge, P67 vs. H67 features) is a symptom of a lack of competition at the moment.

I am concerned before buying into SandyBridge that it may be a dead end rather quickly and it is worth waiting for Socket 2011.

it looks like there won't be any 6 cores on the 1155 mainstream socket

if you want performance, you'll pay the intel price of not able to upgrade without changing sockets... AMD just doesn't have the performance tag

wait for enthusiast socket 2011 if you want more than 4 cores

To add to this will be triple channel memory controllers see daylight with SandyBridge?

Highly doubtful. The differences between memory speeds with Sandy are a frame at best.

You probably won't see anymore than 4 ram slots on 1155 and 2011 single cpu socket boards.

1366 was triple channel and a enthusiast socket so 6 ram slots made sense.
1155 is dual channel and the mainstream socket so the standard 4 slots made sense.
2011 is quad channel and enthusiast socket, but 8 slots doesn't sound realistic on a standard form factor board so 4 slots will likely be the standard.

There isn't any solid info about a future 1355/1365 socket.

For 24GB, you wait for affordable 8GB single sticks or stick to 1366.

Well im running 12 gigs on my sandy 2600K @ 5 ghz and Gigabyte UD4, all slots occupied.

if you need 24 gigs you should probably be on socket 2011 anyways. That's not what 1155 was designed for but it's possible 8GB sticks will hit the market in the future sometime. ;)

Yeah thanks, unfortunately I already have the 6x4 sticks of DDR3 1600. :(

A 2011 with 8 ram slots will probably also come with 2 cpu sockets.

8 slots is do-able on a single socket board, take a look at the supermicro AMD single socket G34 motherboards. it has 8 slots directly above the socket and still fits within the ATX specs so theres no reason intel couldn't do it with LGA-2011. though i'm sure motherboard manufactures will have different versions, some with 4 slots and some with 8 slots.

Ivy Bridge is said to bring 6 and 8 core CPUs and be P67 compatible. I'm optimistic that us 1155 users will have an upgrade path

I don't think an 8 core would be on lga 1155 simply from a market positioning perspective. The likely hood is when Ivybridge hits, lga 1155 will might move to 4/6 cores, dropping 2 cores (Intel has confirmed entry level will be 4 cores with Ivy). While the higher end socket will move from 4/6 cores to 6/8 cores. Intel will almost certainly reserve 8 cores for its highest price segment, unless AMD really does surprise us.

golly if your looking for all that memory bandwidth go with 1366...its got tons of bandwidth...gonna be a while before 2011 hits the market and you can bet you better have deep, deep pockets.....
1366 will look like a bargain....
