can you please tell me what the difference bettween 423 and 478 processors. do they proform better or something because they are bigger.

it's just a packaging. Williamette cores (which are considered the "sucky" P4's) came in both 473 and 478 (early on it was 473, then later it was 478), and northwoods (a, b, and c) came in 478. Prescott also comes in 478.

Basically, the socket itself doesn't mean anything, but the fact that only williamette processors came in 473 tells you, you want 478. It's compatible with newer, better P4's.

Early early P4s use socket 423 like jagec said. If you have a choice, go socket 478; all the Northwoods and most current P4 procs are socket 478.

I have a Willamette based comp. Woo.

Williamettes aren't terrible, but aren't anything special. They're somewhere between a Northwood and a Celeron.

More towards celeron. I guess they might not be too bad, it's just my motherboard runs at 100mhz thus bottlenecking my pc133 to 100mhz. Horrid.
