I heard there were rumors on the internets... many are telling me to get the new nVidia 7800 card and some tell me to wait... but if I were to get one, which one would I get? The GT? The GTX? It really doesn't matter to me. I'm going all out on buying a new card, (my current is the GeForce 4 Ti 4200), and my only real nazi'ness of buying a new card is I want something that will last a little while, as in keeping up with the games. Any suggestions? Wait? Go for it?

At least wait till the ATi cards come out...your so close it would be foolish to just buy an nVidia card when the competition is just around the corner...

but I would go GTX :)

I am pretty sure I do, but another thing I must get is a 400 watt power supply for one of those things. o_O

If your only "pretty sure that you do"...then you don't have one.

Haha. Well said, sir. NewEgg doesn't have my motherboard anymore.. checking the ASUS site, but I am pretty sure I don't. Honestly!

If your planing to run the 7800 on the same motherboard as your current graphics card your gonna be disapointed. The 7800 is pci-e and your mobo is not. Also when you do get the powersupply make sure it's one from a reputible company like Fortron, Enermax, OCZ, Seasonic or PCP&Cooling (there are others as well).

Edit: What processor do you have, if it's an Athlon XP your out of luck. There aren't any pci-e motherboards for them.

Ahh bummer! I have a Mobile Athlon XP-M 2500+ overclocked. Well, what should I get then? Wait?

What you could do is upgrade to an Athlon64 system.

This is what I would recomend:

Fortron AX450-PN.............$50
CHAINTECH VNF4...........$79
AMD Athlon 64 3000+.......$146
eVGA 7800GTX................$470
Total................................$745

Yeah, I just might have to do that. In the past, I have kind of half-assed buying computer parts. But now, I want to go all out, and buy the best I can right now, that will keep up with the years to come. Those AMD 64's are basically taking over.

Edit: Are the new ATI's going to be PCI-E? I really am a newbie at this video card stuff, Last time checked, the 9800's were coming out.

If you are going all-out, you WANT a dual-core CPU. AMD Athlon64 X2 '3800+' is a great budget choice for that, but the 1mb cache for each core on the '4400+' makes it a sweet buy if you can bank that.

And I wouldn't go with a 7800GTX at the moment - too much more $$ than the 7800GT for not enough of a performance difference.

Also - again, if going "all out" - buy an nForce4 SLI-chipset motherboard. Come next year, when your system starts feeling long in the tooth in the 'latest and greatest' games, you get a "cheap" upgrade - no need to buy the current $500 video card, just buy another 7800GT (which will likely be <$200 by then) and slap it in your current system with the other for a HUGE performance boost!

EDIT: My recommendation would run more like -
$353 Athlon64 X2 '3800+'
$335 Albatron GeForce 7800GT
$89 Albatron K8SLi
=====
$777 shipped (including the $55 in mail-in rebates)

If you aren't overclocking, a 400w generic PSU will handle that. Overclock NOTHING. If you want to get into overclocking the CPU or video card down the road - or definitely before you buy a second 7800GT - then you'll want a newer/better PSU.

Personally, I'm a fan of Enermax's Noisetaker series. Rock-solid rails and QUIET, too!

If your running a TI 4200 you dont

lol, if your mobo isn't on newegg chances are it's not pci-e, i'm just assuming that its that old, not a newer discontinued board. The reccomendations they gave you are good.
