i'm talking about intel vs amd lol

intel 3.4C or AMD socket 939 3500+

i do very little gaming and much more multitasking

but it just seems pointless to buy a northwood, when i'll have to upgrade the mobo next time i want to change the processor and the LGA 775 processors and the alike seem kinda dumb to upgrade to now also, since they don't even perform better, but run hotter, but i've heard that the northwood performs better for what i do compared to the socket 754 3200+, what about against the 939 3500+?

i do only minor overclocks btw

the socket 939 chips are somewhat faster due to the fact they support dual channel mode like the northwoods and unlike the socket 754

I would go with the socket 939
 
I'd probably get the P4. Athlons are going PCI-e soon enough, probably before you upgrade again. Plus since you don't game much I'd think the HT and speed in multimedia apps the P4 has would be better. The Athlon chips usually do better in office type stuff, but those apps run nicely on a P3, so who really cares?

If I had to get a single CPU rig I'd probably get a P4, as a P4 with HT is closer to my preferred duallie setup. For a dual I'd definatley prefer Opterons. Currently I'm running a dual Athlon. I'd spring for a PCI-e setup though, as I'm also a SCSI nut and 32/33 PCI slots just aren't enough anymore.
