So which headphones should I get?

Ok, I'm seriously considering the Senn HD497's or the Senn HD212's. I know one is an open pair and one is a sealed pair. What stops me from getting the 497's is just that fact. I would be listening to them on plane rides, in the car, at home and such, and not many people want to listen at the same time. Is the sound leaking that bad? I think I'd like the 212's because they are sealed, which is what I need, and supposedly sound pretty good. Can anyone reccomend me something in the 212 price range that might sound better thats sealed?

I own the HD497s and HD580s. The 479s are pretty good, although sound a bit dry next to the 580s. For under $60 you cant complain though ;). Also note that they are not sealed, and are a bit uncomfortable for extended listening because they sit on your ears, not around. Lastly, headphones are illegal to use in many states while driving, no matter if they are sealed or not.

Sorry to hijack the thread but this is about sealed phones (ruled out 497),
I've done some looking at both 212 pro and 280, and the question is are the 280's worth $50 more?
And how are they in terms of comfort, size, porta/dura bility, "coolness" in public, any one tried both?

Oh and one thing I don't understand, being a newb, is everyone always says 280 pro, what about 280 silver, are they the exact same just diff color and pro refers to either model, or is there a difference (of sound)?

Thanks.

i love my hd-497's and they love me.

but they do get to be very uncomfortable after a while. :(

I wouldn't use either the hd497 or the hd212 on an airplane.
The hd497 sound better than the hd212.
They both look weird in public, but the hd497 is worse.
I never had trouble with the comfort of either one (same design)

The 212's aren't bad sound wise for the money, and they're pretty comfortable, but once you get a good pair (I upgraded recently to HD580s), you'll wonder how you could stand the old ones.

HD497 is a good choice.

Guy who said that they are uncomfortable... That makes me that much more happy that I got the HD477s, with cloth padding compared to sticky vinyl. :)

What's your price range?

I'd prefer to spend the $50, but if the 280 silver/pro's are ones that'll "make you wonder how you could stand the old ones [212 pro]", I'll spend $100. Any better closed phones than the 280 for $100?
And since the Senn's are bulky/expensive/tacky I'll get smaller ones for public

If you can stand sticking things in your ears check out the Shure E2c. They sound better than the hd212 and isolate MUCH better.

Alternative products include the Etymotic ER6 and ER6i (neither of which I have heard)

heh, actually when I said I'll get smaller ones I was thinking of getting the shure's.
But I also want a set of phones for better quality and comfort.

Why don't you get an open pair then? Use the Shures in Noisy environments, then the others in quiet.

I thought about that but I'm 16, so it'll bother my family and I want some isolation, how are your 497's in terms of noise leakage both ways.

I do not own them anymore, as I upgraded to the hd580's

They let nearly all sound in, and leak to the degree that you can here most of the music two feet away, and some probably 5 feet away (depending on the environment and volume).

Thanks for your help, I think I'll go with closed, now 212pro, 280 pro or 280 silver, any advice?
