I got bit by the upgrade bug. Fuck.

Currently, my pc consists of:

Msi x58a-gd65
980x at 4 ghz
Hx1000 power supply
R9 fury (from crossfire 280x)
12gb corsair dominator memory
256gb Samsung ssd for boot and programs
1tb Samsung ssd for games
1tb velociraptor (still in pc, ditched for the ssd)
3tb mass storage drive.

What do I look for with a new motherboard, cpu and ram?

Do I even upgrade?

I'll definitely notice an increase from the pci-e 3 and better sata controller

The PC is pretty much used for Web browsing, and playing csgo right now. Not ruling out more games.

I think I could sell my 280x cards, mobo, cpu, and ram for about 500 (what do you think?)

What do I spend the money on?

You tell me and I'll give you lots of kiss!

i just listed the entire setup on craigslist, let's see where it goes.

i've narrowed it down to the 6700k vs the 5820k.

am i going to lose much when i lose 2 cores from the 980x to the 6700K?

Web surfing and CSGO... lol.

You wont even notice the upgrade.

Then play PC games. Your current PC isn't exactly preventing you from doing that. Buying a new PC wont change the fact that you're NOT playing PC games NOW when you can be.

So you really don't think I'd notice much difference even with the faster hard drive controller?

Your current SATA controller isn't preventing you from playing games, either.

Not sure why buying a new rig will suddenly motivate you to play games when your current rig will play games just fine right now. Especially if you're gaming at 1080P.

Spend your budget on games. You'll likely, very quickly mind you start to rack up a back log of games you haven't played but need to well before you need a new gaming rig or even an upgrade.

I just kind of backed off for a while. Want to get back into it though.

This computer sat for so long, just doesn't feel right playing games on a dated pc.

Mainly I got bit by the upgrade bug.

Why are you so upset that I want to upgrade my computer?

Not really upset. Pretty sure I couldn't care any less on what you do. Just giving you my honest opinion on the matter.

Because it doesn't need upgrading. If it isn't broke don't fix it. ;)

Do you leave your computer running 24/7? If yes, then the chances that you'll notice a faster SSD on a faster SATA controller is highly unlikely as the biggest benefit will be in boot times. SSD/HDD speed is irrelevant for most games.

Most games are more GPU limited than CPU limited. Upgrading your CPU wont give you any noticeable increase in FPS or game play. For example. Take a look at my signature. Aside from being on different displays I wouldn't be able to tell the different between gaming on my i5 2400 HTPC or my i5 4690k "gaming" rig. One is rocking a 980 and the other one (gaming) is rocking SLI 970s. Both computers max FPS at 60 on 1080P. The i5 2400 is nearly 5 years old now. I just built the gaming rig last year because my previous rig had issues. Otherwise, I'd still be rocking that i7 870.

If you're looking for a new gaming experience then build a new rig for a higher resolution. I'm assuming you're gaming at 1080P. Go get a 1440P or 4K monitor and build a rig that can handle that. 1080P isn't going to tax your current system. You can literally play every single PC game on the market right now. Nothing is stopping you especially not your current rig.

I will stand as the objection to ALL YALL.

You want to play at high (not ultra) settings at 60FPS 1080p? You have an awesome system! no need to upgrade.

But what about Ultra settings?

What about 1440p?

What about 144FPS (and a monitor to match)

What about ultrawide resolutions?

How is your boot time?

Yes.. yes... FEEL THE UPGRADE BUG. FEEL IT.

I probably should have noted that I have a 4k monitor. Does that change anything? But I think you are right.

Oh! oh yes... you FEEEEEL the bug... 4K is a daunting mountain to climb...

Long story short: a single 280X will run 1080p at high detail.

4K at high detail is 4x the work.

4K at Ultra is arguably 6-8x the work.

I run 4k and two OC'd Titan X cards, and I can't turn up the settings to ultra in all games.

So.. yeah, you may need an upgrade.

we shall see what i want to spend. i have both cards, motherboard, cpu, and ram listed on craigslist for 500. I might be better off parting everything out and ebaying it.

Thats a clever idea. You will always get more profit if you sell parts individually, its just more of a bitch to sell.

i think i just realized why i backed off from gaming, nothing intentional, it's because my girlfriend won't shut the fuck up when i'm trying to play.

Sounds like you need to be single again or find another girlfriend.

Move the gaming PC out of the kitchen?

ROFL:D:D:D

I'm looking at moving in with my current girlfriend soon and dread how it will go with the gaming department myself. The past 2 I have lived with were saints and left me the hell alone when I wanted to game. The current one... I can almost hear the bitching already. Sure, I have to STFU when she wants to watch Walking Dead or whatever show is on, but I'm sure when I am zoned out and concentrating on my killstreak in BO3, that will be the perfect time for her to start bitching about how I haven't made time to listen to her first-world white-girl problems and its making her feel invalidated and ignored. I'm going to start with buying some great headphones, but if that doesn't convey the message, I'm going to start pretending I'm one of those gamer junkies that seriously loses my shit while competitively gaming; scream-spewing arrays of swear words at the monitor while flipping my keyboard in disgust and chucking my mouse at the wall. That should scare her enough to keep her from wanting to interrupt my "kill kill kill" time.

I'd wait until later this year OP. Upgrading right now just doesn't seem like a good idea to me at least. If you had to do it now, I would say look at LGA2011 instead so you can run dual cards on an x99 motherboard and give that 4k monitor the love it needs. But with Pascal GPU's on the horizon that might be able to run your 4k with just one card and the future of LGA2011 possibly ending in the next year or so, so much will be changing that it just doesn't seem worth upgrading right now unless you really need it.

never EVER do that. i agreed to go to her mom's work party before doing that shit. NEVER.

Yeah, no joke. Some gals prey on a guy who just starts saying default/"yes" to everything. A week later you are stuck watching her best friend's kids on a Saturday night because "you said you would that one night when you were playing your video games"

I can try to be polite and suggest that "right now" isn't a good time, and to "please talk to me later about this"... but then she want's a schedule as to exactly when it will be, and I can bet that she will use it as an opportunity to start an argument that disrupts my time anyways.

She says that if I "just ask" to talk about it later or tell her that "right now isn't a good time" she will drop it... yeah, right. Try it. I dare me. It results in a drama queen moment about how "its never a good time for you!"

Gawd... why am I doing this again?!?! Oh, yeah... 95% of the time everything is cool and I'm a sucker for that. Too bad that other 5% of the time when she just gets randomly upset just F's the whole system up enough to make me want to walk. I'll admit, her $200k/yr. salary and $700k home might be influencing my decision making skills here.

So, that leaves me with one option if headphones don't work: be a rage consumed lunatic when gaming. Make her fear even knocking on that door when its shut. Its either that or I build a "shack out back" one-room office building where I can lock the doors. But then I need a shitter out there, a fridge, and of course, a "doghouse" bed.
