What the hell is all I can say.. why are there pins on the motherboard. are there pins on the processor!? what the shizzle!?!?

with above problem takin care of (hopefully by replies) my next question arises.

Is this a good proc? i've never touched an intel system that wasnt socket 478 and never owned an intel system myself. thx
 
There are no pins on lga775 processors, just contact points. The socket has little spring thingies (cant remember the name) that make contact with the points on the processor.

They are just metal pads on the CPU. Called Lands.
Just as you noticed, the pins are on the mobo. Its a much better design.


Thta is a good processor. I would however recommend getting a different mobo. SOmething from Abit like the AW8-Max.

I wouldnt be suprised to see your feelings change on the new build being your replacement. ;)
 
Yes, dual core PD's are VERY quick CPU's....I had one last week.
 
This will probably be an HTPC I'm hoping this board comes with raid 5 support. (i dont see it saying it supports raid at all, does that not come standard with intel chipsets?

I will be getting this motherboard with the processor at a great deal that isnt open to public so no reason to share where I'm getting it from sorry =/.

I can get another motherboard not too big of deal since this mobo/cpu combo is cheaper than the proc alone.

looked at ram as well, supports dual channel (always nice)

The board you posted does not have RAID 5 support. RAID is only supported on the ICH7R, not the ICH7.

Here's a list of them at Newegg that support RAID.

I'm running 2gb of this Corsair DDR2-667 on my Pentium D/Intel D945GTPLR motherboard with no problems. The SPD timings are 5-5-5-15, but it runs 4-4-4-12 with no problems.
 
I have a PD 830. It runs VERY warm. Dont expect a quiet hs/f for it ;)
Go for the xp90 with a delta fan.
 
it supports all DDR2.

Dont expect to overclock it on air much past 3.2 or 3.3, and watch the seperate throttle.
 
I used that 820 today at work. It's fairly slow, but smooth. If you werent OC'ing, I'd go for at least a 3ghz Pentium D.

while you're overclocking, the temperature readings you'll get are from only one core on the processor. And if they get too hot, they'll thermal throttle independantly, the cores are broken up into Core 0 and Core 1, if Core 1 gets too hot, it will throttle independantly while Core 0 may continue to work normally. Im just warning you about it before hand so you dont wonder what the hell is wrong with your processor if you are doing heavy multi-task under an overclock and some of your programs begin to get choppy.

i'v personally found the stock HSF's in all of intel's LGA775 processors to be superb. They're quiet and very efficent coolers. Like its been said, heat will kill your high OC attempts, anything above 3.2 or 3.3 and you'll problably be getting into load temps of 75 or 80C regaurdless of how great the HSF is. So personally i'd stick with the stock one, see how it does, if you really want to upgrade, try Zalman CNPS7700-Cu. But in the end its dual prescotts, so really any amount of air and copper/aluminum that any heatsink fan combo has is really not going to help for any huge overclocks.

edit- its worth mentioning that they do use E0 stepping prescotts which are kick ass overclockers in the 600 series. So you could problably hit 3500-3700Mhz pretty effortlessly if you have exotic cooling. The only killer is heat.
 
alright, well i might go to WCing depending how loud/hot this beast gets. Most likely this will be a compy for the rest of my family to use so I can game on mine, but i do love to overclock hehe.

And it would be my first intel and intel oc. any video card suggestions for HTPC (DVR/tivo) or tvtuner? made a post in HTPC forums already.
 
My 630 easily hits 4.5GHz on stock voltage and water cooling. Just in caseyou were wondering exactly HOW good the E0 stepping is. ;)
But I dont know how well the DUal cores will OC.
 
whats a 630? ><? i think mines and 820

does 630 = socket 478? does socket 478 now have pins on mobo? why did the decide to do that? im guessing intel didnt like dealing with broken pins rofl
 
The intel 6xx series CPUs are the 2MB 64-bit capable processors. They are Hyper Threaded but have only a single core. Still a Prescott core, just slight differences.

It is a LGA775 just liek the 8xx series.

I dont remember there being a HUGE problem with broken pins on the 478s. I think they just made the change because its a better design, and its easier to install the CPU.
 
Well, IMO, Its easier to install and more idiot-proof. Not to mention the retention mechanism is a huge improvement over the last one that allowed the CPU to be ripped from the socket by a heatsink with Arctic Silver 5 applied.

still happens with S939 and 754 ;)

the heatsink install and removal is a hell of alot easier too, once you got the older heatsink on the 478s, you'd need a butter knife or something to pry it off.
