They are "the" processor to buy at the moment, right? Meaning, best price/performance ratio?

And what's the deal with the stepping, I know that the g0 is the one you want for overclocking. So if I buy from newegg, will it be a g0?

i dont know if your guarenteed a G0 from newegg. I have the b3 stepping which i purchased before the G0 came out. U definately want to stick with G0 because it runs much cooler and has a higher capacity to overclock with aircooling. you can buy a guarenteed G0 from clubit.com
 
definately go through clubit to guarantee g0 stepping. mine gets here tomorrow!
 
most of the newer chips are G0's. I didn't get a G0 but the B3 I have is 24/7 stable at 3.4 on air.
 
This chip seems really hot but about how long do you think it will take for it to be outclassed? I only ask because the last processor I bought, a P4 560J, was obsolete less than a year after I bought it. I had paid $500 for it so needless to say I was pretty pissed. :( I've heard that the L737 batch can clock up to 3.6 relatively easily on air and even higher on water so it seems like it won't be put out by the coming Penryns but if Nehalem comes out in Q3 or Q4 2008, will these processors do to Q6600s what C2D did to P4? Right now I can't decide between a cheap E4300/6300 system to tide me over until Nehalem arrives or going with Q6600 until Nehalem prices drop. I guess if Nehalem gets delayed like the Penryns though, my decision will be made a lot easier. :D
 
It's like this at the moment. Software creators can hardly create desktop applications that fully utilize the current dual core chips let alone tri or quad core chips. Truly I dont see quad core being obsolete any time soon, espically with the efficiency of these chips.

I mean first they have to start righting programs that tax the ipc of these chips then they have to start righting code to tax all the cores of these chips. And honestly I just dont see that happening any time soon, I could be wrong though (I highly doubt it).
 
Penryn is only a minor update ('tock'), but Nehalem is a major architecture change ('tick'), so it could beat the current generation soundly. Equally, it might be delayed for ages and provide only incremental improvements. However, even if it's fantastic, it wouldn't mean that the Q6600 becomes bad, and waiting for future improvements in computer hardware is a bit of a curse, since you could always have waited a few months more for something else to come out whenever you buy.
