Most people's plan, including mine, was to go for the value option on launch day but now it's come to light that it isn't launching until Feb. How has this changed your next gen buying equation?

Hasn't since it was pretty much predicted it wasn't going to launch until Feb/March along with some kind of announcement or launch by Nvidia. I think it's worth the wait this gen because my 2560X1600 might not benifit anymore from the super high ends coming out. I don't need 3+ gig Vram so I think I may be pretty much set on the 7950 1.5 gig model depending on reviews vs. the 7970.... Unless the GK104 launches for $299 and is faster than the GTX580 then that thing is mine!!!!

I saw lots of posts in the review thread about ppl planning to buy the 7950 on the 7970 launch day and no one seemed to correct them. I'm probably in the same boat as you with the 7950 1.5G since I do 1080p and don't care for eye candy.

p.s. i could have sworn I typed "now what" not "no what". Derp.

This is a soft launch of the 7970 though.... I never read anywhere that they were launching the whole 7XXX series on the 9th... I heard Feb/March is the official launch. I could be wrong though....

They hard launched last night; newegg is already sold out.

They were releasing very limited stock... I thought that was a soft/paper launch like they said it was going to be.... LOL

It was paper launched in December, soft launched last week, and will probably be shipping steadily when the 7950 is launched.

Its a smart game, get the numbers to roll around in the head, give them a couple weeks to come up with the funds. Sell it at a decent markup as a small supply king of the hill card, then ramp up production for both the 7950 and 7970, for the Nvidia launch where both can then be priced competitively.

Further, unless you have a large-format (greater than 1920x1080) display *and* run one of those GPU-crusher games, the HD7970 (heck, the HD7950, for that matter) may well be overkill. At 23 inches, 1920x1080 at 30fps or better on a minimum basis (in short, no drops under that) is gravy. While the HD6870 is within my price range (and that is today - before any HD7xxx-related inventory clearance price drops), it's overkill for the games I play, especially with i5-K (and a mild overclock to a *mere* 4 GHz even) as the driving CPU. Basically, I'd be *display* bottlenecked - and I don't have space for additional displays OR a larger display. Therefore, what's the point of HD6870?

30fps or better is not gravy. Most people consider that the minimum for a card to be considered good. Most people would say 60fps and higher is gravy with some people now wanting 120fps as the minimum.

ummmmm maybe it is for some people??

Then you would contradict your entire statement.

I prefer having 60fps at a minimum. Cant stand going lower then that as it affects my gaming (most specifically FPS') For anything else I aim for 60fps but will take 45+

Sure I can see it being so for some people. Like some people think a 5450 is sufficient for 1920x1080 gaming. But I doubt most people think that.

Depends on the game.

For some games (believe it or not) 1920x1080 is, in fact, overkill (because they aren't designed to go that high), and others stop that high for the same reason (Sins of a Solar Empire Trilogy, for example).

It still comes down to *horses for courses* - and the HD7950 and HD7970 are pretty high-end horses.

are you in the right forum? :D

I believe he is. I believe he's running that 5450 to get screen output only, not to game on it. He thinks 60 FPS is sufficient for him. However, since some are used to 120, they find it slow. It's a matter of preferance. It's about the amount people find sufficient for themselves, not whose stuff is hard and whose not.

Oh really? So what videocard do you think he uses to game with?

A Radeon 9200 SE.

He talked about 30fps being sufficient (as a minimum) and "gravy". Where did you get 60fps from?

No, he didn't. He said 30 FPS is the "MINIMUM". Please read it properly. I was referring to the other posts on "60 or 120 FPS". If it wasn't for the "being hard" BS, I wouldn't have posted in this thread.

He attacked him by discriminating his GPU, and called him soft. This being hard or soft BS on this site is a dead horse that's still getting beaten.
