I was just looking on newegg.com for a hard drive, but there are so many, I don't know what is good/bad! So that is why I am here right now, I'm looking for some advice from you [H]ard people. Since I still have a 5400rpm drive, I think it is about time to upgrade this thing. I will spend 75 bucks on a hard drive... any suggestions?

Get the biggest WD Special Edition drive you can afford. WD has the best warranty, and consistently rates at the top in reliability.
 
'bobsaget' it mostly depends what your needs are. Given your small budget of $75 I would opt for an IDE solution (as opposed to SATA, which are great, but don't seem to fit your needs). Important parameters when looking at a drive are:

size (obviously),

rotational speed - you're only real options with an IDE solution here is 5400 or 7200RPM, given that most if not all drives are 7200RPM and that your current drive is already 5400RPM, the obvious choice for you here is to buy a 7200RPM drive. Western Digital offers SATA drives that run @ 10000RPM, while these are GREAT drives, they can be a little pricey, and are only offered in 36.7gB and 74gB flavours.

cache - I would always recomend you buy a drive with 8mB of cache, as opposed to 2mB, while some people might argue that this parameter is insignifigant, I noticed signifigant gains in going from a 2mB cache to a 8mB cache drive, and they cost little if nothing more then the 2mB cache drives

Seek Times - 8.9ms is about average I believe, the high speed SATA raptors have a much better 4.5ms read seek time, but like I said, these drives dont seem to fit your needs.

Finally, brand name. I don't want to open up a can of worms here, so I will just say what my past experience has been. I have owned drives from both Maxtor and WD, both companies have great RMA services (though Maxtor's RMA process was a little quicker). I bought my first WD 8mB cache drive about 2 years ago, and have since bought 3 more, I LOVE these drives (120gB WD 7200RPM, 8mB cache etc.), though some people question the quality of WD's drives I will say that from my own personal experience with these drives I have never had a problem.

I hope this helps you a bit in deciding what you want, I would also listen to the posts here about the 80gB drive from newegg, good deal, for yoru cost, I just wanted to enlighten you a little about the terms :)
 
as far as reliability goes... I personally love WD.. i have a 2.5GB in my 486dx2 66 thats been running for many years w/out a hitch. Thats why I went with WD when i recently threw the 160GB in my main box. And check around for rebates too, i got my WD for like 119 CAD after a mail in rebate from futureshop (best buy to u US folks)
 
I've used this username for years =P And i've bene using it on this forum 9 months before you =P. When I was younger Fear Factory used to be my favourite band, I got this nick from a song on the album Obsolete (appropriately named HiTech-Hate) lol, and that was like 5 or 6 years ago. Anyways I know this has nothing to do with hd's so go buy a WD! lol

i've been using it for years on everything also (cs, quake, unreal, bf1942) and i too got it from the fear factory song

oh yea and...
