Ok,
Yesterday I won a physX card at QuakeCon.. Im kinda curious if you guys think I should hold onto it or sell it.. I really dont see much of a point on holding on to it since nearly NOTHING supports it, and there doesnt look to be much promise for much future developement..

2nd, My main comp is my new DV8000t Lappy.. Im about to build an AMD64 3500 939 rig, and I figure Ill just drop it in there, but if its not gonna really see much use I might as well sell it while the gettins good ya know..

I havent even gotten to test it yet cause like I said, I have no rig, but they also gave me 2GB Patriot DDR2 800mhz DC kit, and a 1gb 200mbps thumb drive.. all for getting 20 points in Cell Factor in 10 minutes :-P..

Lemme know what u guys think..

I say sell it while you can still get a good price for it, then wait for the prices to drop and buy a new one... :).

Unless you hold onto it, I mean, it was free right? Do you need the cash for any other upgrades?

Yeah, need cash for new Car :)

But im still gonna build me a new Rig, and yeah sice It was free, I might hold onto it for a little while just so I can play with it a bit..

sell it, its useless anyways
It will get more usefull in time. For now it's not worth the money for most poeple.
For me it is because I like Graw. And aslmost played out BOS.
But if budged is a problem and a PPU is more for hardcore gamers at the moment and in the near future, who will play at the moment only a few titles in optimum setting and that is
Graw
BoS

So sell all that stuf is no bad idea. If you go first for the car its wise to have a bit reserve cash if that 'new' car need some repairs.

What will come first Car or gamerig.
If gamerig
A budged iNtel or AM2 could do it.
Depends how much you get in return for that stuff.
The lesser its better to keep it. the more that low budged 939 get more atractive.

If you keep it 2GB is Nice and future proof.

why go 939? if you are on a budget, then build a low cost future proof system...
you've got the ram... buy a cheap conroe (look exactly how cheap they are... get a good 975X mobo (either Asus or intel Bad Axe) and a good power supply, cheap out on the rest, you wont regret it.

From there you can go either CrossFire or SLI (with hacked drivers, probubly official ones in the future). The upgrade path from there is going to keep you in the game for a few years.

and at this point AM2 has more lower end options than S939. I say sell it when you need it it should be cheaper.

Well, if you like Cellfactor, you could keep it. Or, you could just keep it to be able to say you're one of the 5 people on these forums who has one.

But by the time it is widely used in many games (yes, that day will come, whether it's AGEIA or not), it will either be cheaper, replaced by a better model, or even made by a different company.

yeah go am2 it's really the same price and you can save money with that ram you just won, unless you already started buying parts and it's too late.

I'd sell the card and maybe the memory if you can get a good price for it. Put it to a new system. If you decide to go with the newer amd stuff then keep the ram. Eitherway nice swag

Sell the useless PPU.

The PPU is not useless. It has a few games for it, and will probably have many more in the future. If you like Cell Factor or any of the other games it supports then it isn't useless.

It just the trend of the time.
It "cool" to say: "the PPU is useless"...
Even if you don't know jack&shit about what you are talking about.
Remeber all the funny claims there have been posted in this forum?
  • That AGIEA wants to make money of their API, not the hardware.
  • ATI claimed 9 times faster physcis than PhysX...and then "delayed" 9-12 months (for their DX10 hardware)
  • Conroe will be "sufficient" for physcis
  • The CPU is lightyears ahead of the PPU for physcis
  • no current games uses the PhysX (old one, but it refuses to die...)
  • ect...

But pretty good for something "useless" to actually boost the physics in ~6 games already ;)

Terra - One day we have to make a "Top 10 List" over stupid claims in this subforum :p

I would sell it (keep it in the box if you haven't opened it) and buy some hardware that will give you a better experience now, as opposed to whenever a worthwhile game that actually supports the PPU is finally released.

sell the card, and the pen drive. buy the core 2 duo instead and use the ram that they provided. the core 2 duo is crazzzy HOT. definatley sell the PhysX card

just keep it dude... you'd get what .. about $150 for it??

if you need $150 so badly just work at a gas station for a week then quit...

I doubt this subforum will exist in a couple years time though.

Now that would surely make the Top 10 List.
AGEIA is on the market.
Havok is releasing HavokFX.
ATI and NVIDA has stated they want to do GPU-physics...
So you really need to elaborate...

Terra - Hardware physics is here to stay...

I'd be hard pressed to believe that, especially since the big boys are adding physics in video drivers and Carmack himself said dedicated ppu's are just gimmicks in not so few words.

I will make sure to notify you when the nex game supporting PhysX is released and thus making your statement invalid...

The ATI/NVidia solutions perhaps, as they're not going to live or die based on the success/failure of hardware physics processing. But the dedicated/standalone PPUs I don't have much faith in. Agree to disagree, I guess.

As far as I see it.. Since there is a public PPU SDk out there, people will be making thier own drivers and apps for use with the PPU card and possible even release patches for games not listed or on the list to be compatible with the PPU.. I think from here I will hold on to the card and seee what happens, and If by the end of the year im not impressed with the progress of what I find for the PPU I will sell the card.. I really dont care whats its worth or what it will be worth later, Id just like it do actually be of SOME use in the time I have it.. But it seems for now itll just sit in my box waiting for someone to release and app/game to test it with..

*sigh*... why must those assholes make me wait...

Out of tha tlist Ut2K7 is the only game there Id play.........if it was out....

Aside from my cell factor demo, seems that my PPU is gonna be pretty useless until UT2K7 is released.. I hate MMO's, and the only good RTS ever made was Starcraft... so it looks like im SOL until December for Cellfactor... anyone have ANY idea when Ut2K7 is gonna be released.. i poked atround a bit and from whar I read it was supposed to be released for PC and PS3 at the same time.. and since the PS3 isnt out yet, and is only rumored to be released at the end of this year, am I just gonna be holding my breath?

-Evil Juggalo

well... if they go by the same naming standard as every other company on the face of the earth they have about 3 months to release it... Because if they miss the Christmass launch they are gunna have to rename it ut2008 and wait till november/december 2007...

OK, I'm new here, but Terra do you HAVE to crap on everyones statements..

you know, opionions are like assholes, yadda yadda.

GROW UP MAN! :p

Despite his comments being kinda assholic.. at least most of them are informative and are not just pure flame.. He quotes your mistakes, and shows you where your wrong.. granted I think it could be toned down a bit.. now stay on topic plz..

-Evil Juggalo

Yeah!

back on topic: sell the paperweight before it has no value! ;)

1) 100$ is WAY too low.. could get 200-250$ easy on Ebay

2) I still want it, but I also dont want it.. I dont have a PC so it really does me no good till I build one..

3) But on the other hand I already have a badass laptop.. But if it wont play UT2K7 i might as well chunk it and build my desktop..

So I dunno.. im pretty torn as to what to do with it.. I WANT to use it, but I cant.. sucks.. anyone wanna RENT it from me :-P

Not for long.... I am already seeing the price drop to 279.00 from 300.00 after being on the shelf (and not selling IMO) for a few months. Give it a few more months and they might be sub 200.00.

Considering it was free, and I didnt work very hard for it, im not really too concerned about how much I get now.. As long as I can play UT2K7 in the future ill be fine.. but I gotta wait till it comes out to test it on my lappy.. if it runs like shxt, im building a rig with PhysX

-Evil Juggalo

You seem to be drooling over UT2007.

I'd sell the PhysX card, keep gaming on your laptop until UT2007 is released later this fall and UT2007 is released. All these CPU prices will fall, faster hardware will be available and maybe even the first DX10 samples from AMD or nVidia.

Weird imagining AMD possibly leading the graphics market, wow.
