I've been playing around with a P4M 1.6 and it wasn't overclocking very well (IS7 mobo). In the BIOS, the temp monitor showed the CPU at 42C at stock speed (actually 12x100 due to the speedstep thing with mobile CPUs). This seemed like a lot, so I checked the contact between the HSF and CPU core (no IHS on mobile CPUs). There was essentially a bulge in the middle of the core that wasn't letting the HSF contact most of the core.

It was like a $30 CPU, so I figured what the hell and lapped it with a little 600grit then 1200grit paper only until I could see the core sanded evenly. Surprisingly, the CPU still works! Now, I'm getting 42C under load at 2.4GHz!

I tried that on an Athlon, didn't get into it too much though so I don't think i removed any material.
 
worked out well, then. my brother lapped the stepping off his p4 ihs. but that's not at cool. i have lapped the core on my video card, i just bent it a bit too much (or something) so it isn't very oc-friendly ATM.

how far does the chip go now?

Id like to see the pics of that! i have a buddy with a 1.6p4-m thats laying around.
 
heh, I didn't notice the front page thing :)

The CPU is currently at 2.58GHz (12x 215) at default voltage. The idle temps are around 39C and load are around 45C using an original Vantec Aeroflow. I haven't had much time playing with it as I'm trying to get my boss' beige G3 running OSX and that is just taking up too much time. I should have some time to try to go a little higher tomorrow.

I'd take a pic, but it doesn't look that impressive. There are a few scratches still in it from the 600 (the core seems pretty soft) but my goal was to get the core flat, not mirror smooth. The way I could tell that it was messed up in the first place was by taking a razor blade and putting it perpidicular to the core and looking at it from the side in front of a light. From that, I could see that it was FAR from flat. There was light leaking through all over the place.
 
this sounds like a b0 stepping overclock, the P4-M C1's can do 4ghz easily
 
He still hasn't finished overclocking yet. ;) Congradulations on that overclock and doing something I know I would mess up. :eek:

basically he's saying he sanded down the core of his processor to make it smooth, thus letting the heatsink make good contact with the core.

well almost, there are other factors but if the cpu isn't overheating when you are pushing more electrons through it then it ......uh......will still be running

Well, I think it is a B0 stepping (if Sandra is correct). I am currently at 12x227 (2.72GHz) at 1.65V 41C idle, 48C load. Any further seems to lock up under load. It was a good run :D
 
you know your [H] when you sand your processors bare core down to get perfect contact with the heat sink :eek:
