At MML recently this weekend I picked up a Prescott 2.8E for $125. (a pretty good buy)

I currently have a MAX-3 mobo with a Zalman ALCU 7000+ cooler and 1GB of Mushkin PC3500 2-5-2-2-T1 RAM. Throw in a Vantec 520W power supply and I feel I'm ready to dance with the infamous Prescott.

Now what I'm wondering is how well do these overclock?

If you have a prescott proc (preferably a 2.8 with mobo combo) then let me know your experiences.

I'm just trying to get a basis of how far I can push this mofo.

Thanks for all you can do for me [H]

This doesn't really answer your question, but from what I've read you'll probably need water to push it to it's limits because of the heat. On air I'd be scared to push that sucker past 3.5.

How can you guys be scared? Is it to hard to run mbm5 and trust the intel thermal scaling? Plus i highly doubt you're going to be able to even get into your OS if its not going to be stable.

Just use common sense.

im gonna take a stab and guess your idle temps at stock and while o/c'n  .
at 200 fsb you will do ... um 124F at idle and 141F under load.
at 230 fsb you will do ... um 143F at idle and 161F under load.
at 260 fsb you will do ... um you wont :p

Same board and cpu but running a Thermalright SP-94. Just air cooling with a 92mm blowhole, intake, out take on the back of the case, and another one on the side of the case above the cpu so no real extreme attempts at trying to cool it down.

Here are my settings
FSB and Memory - 215.37
AGP - 71.79
PCI - 35.89
Multiplier - 14

Only thing I did was mess with my FSB and 215 is all I could get it to do stable.

All this pc does is run two instances of F@H so the cpu is always at 100% and running at 148 degrees fahrenheit.

I got it running at 3.1 stable with stock voltage yet she's putting out some mad heat. I'm in the neighborhood of 140-160F under full load. I'm like WTF  but it is a pressy. :D

I got a Zalman ALCU 7000+ with AS3. Seems to be alright so far. I'm going to throw some math at the proc for a couple days then see if I can bring it a bit higher with more voltage.

Thank you [H] for all your assistance and experience!

FWIW - I've got a 2.8E on the bench at home, with a Zalman CNPS5700D on it. It's on an Intel 875 MoBo, with no OC (workstation). I just brought it up.....but, after an all night run of MemTest I seem to have about 45C for the core temp. I'll let you know idle / load I'm getting after I get a little more "cockpit" time on it. I've got a 3.0E on the shelf for a new workstation for me, sometime later this year....

Good Luck - B.B.S.

this prescott isn't that bad :O..quite hot, but better than i expected. I live in a hoooot part of the country and i keep it the 2.8 at 3.2 stable with shitty cooling. I'm tempted to look into water cooling to make this guy shoot up.

I got one O' them Prescotts too. Along with a Max 3 and Zalman 7000cu.
FBS @ 243 and volts at 1.48, I idle at 48C and load temps are 67C - this is in California w/ no AC. I currently have 1 80mm intake, 1 80mm exhaust and 1 120mm blowhole. My case temps are nice and cool, its the nature of this chip to run hot as hell.
I'm gonna pick up one of those Thermalright XP120 HSF when they hit, the Zalman isn't cutting it.

Its hot, but it sure does fly.......

TOWELGUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi :D

I got a 2.8 Prescott. FSB running at 230, CPU at 3.22 stable. My average temp is at 51C. Not too bad considering I live in CA and it's hot as hell here right now.

I,ve had mine for a couple of weeks. I live in the South. I have no aftermarket HSF. The A/C is not on. Use two regular case fans, 'cause they were in there. And yesterday decided to have a marathon game session, lasting about 8 or 9 hours, just to see about this heat issue I've read so much about. And to see if I could melt stuff.

Anyway, the temp at the end of several hours of game play was 41c. It currently idles at 29c and generally stays there. It was about 89% yesterday, again I didn't have the AC on. I cooled with Amstel light myself.

So, my 2.8E won't get hot enough so far. It's broken! Just my luck.

:)

well from what I've been reading the 2.8E has about average p4 temps, It's actually the 3.0E and 3.2E.

I did find that the mainboard, and God knows what else, suffered from heat more. ( I did see the article pertaining to this awhile back.)
Without moving to the newer platform for Prescott, and given what you said about equal temps for Northwood and Prescott 2.8: then on a board designed to take the 2.8's "heat", let's call it: the potential for this thing @ the price would be very good. It's very very fast and the big cache was a factor for choosing it. Why not for the same price as the C? And whatever SSE3 is, by jove I've got it!

Oh, and I did lower the core voltage as much as the board would allow. Not low enough I think. I'm not Tech savy.. let me state that clearly! But why are some folks running this @ only 3 to 3.3mhz and upping this voltage? I wish I could lower my voltage more and then clock this higher. But that's just my weird logic maybe, 'cause I'm learning this by the seat of my pants.
:)

I have read around that the temp may be reading hotter then it actually is in some situations. I would probably investgate.

it is generally accepted that ABIT boards read temps a little hot.

no its not. where did you hear that? that cessor is a hot mofo period.
actually i think the heat of that sob E killed something on my mobo. speedfan completely freaks out and cpu utilization goes ballistic when the E was installed. I now put the C in and it still broken, i cant run that program period now. Only broad scan programs like aida32 or sandra dont make it go berserker.

Uhmm. After a little more experimenting tonight- again the Prescott does fine, also the power supply. But my board and my somewhat older cards, a year or two old, seem not ready for "Prime Time Players."

I don't have fancy stuff. I don't mind either. But I won't lie...I don't. I only have an 865PE to put this on. Runs ok. Actually a fine board even if not the top of the line. But Prescott ready? The Vcores are too high. Who's gonna run this @ 1.85 whatever? (Ok, someone will...I take that back.) Great for Northwoods, but not as many options for Prescott in vcore choices. So therefor, not Prescott ready actually. Just sort of, kind of.

So, tonight my video card flips out, I think! Cause my monitor went black...was out of frequency range??? That's what it said. What the hell does that mean? Never happened before. Shut it down for an hour.. let it cool and decided on setting bios myself. No "auto" anything Thank-you. That only makes the retail Intel fan run at a ridiculously low speed, among other things.( That's a subject for another day.) Mind, I wasn't overclocking here.

After shut down for an hour and my settings.. Video & monitor fine.

But I did experience an "event" here in the last 2 hours. Yet I don't think it's the Prescott's fault.( More like, "I'm really NOT ready for Prescott boards.")

This CPU is possibly a 3.8 or something lurking around in there and that it runs @ a core voltage around 1.5v or so. And it's not really a 2.8mhz @ 1.4v (Ok, it's really a Pentium Pro!!! )

Oh hell, motherboards have always been the hardest thing to cool. That much I do know. Cooling a relatively small processor and surface area is cake compared to a mainboard with all the hot stuffs plugged into it.

(Oh and, Abit boards have historically read temps too high. But you know that going in and love 'em anyway.)

My apologies to the thread starter, I do have the 2.8E but not your board. Though I have many Abits and love them all, including the ole BX133. Good Stuff. However, I do share your CPU. Therefor, I hope none of this is considered off topic. And thanks for starting the thread :)

hey i didnt mean to come off crady but ... who isnt.
those 865's are rock solid and feature rich and they do clock well... but i havent had one cept for a customer and i wasnt about to clock her board. :)
Be careful and check event viewer, maybe the log will lead up to the boom-bah and show you the cause of problem. GL

I got it to run at 4GHz But not stable and can only get a screenshot. If I try to run an application other than pasting it on paint, it will crash.

I have a 2.8E with the max3
currently running at 246fsb/mem 3.444ghz @1.565V Temps under load hit 70C
anything over 247 will error on prime :( but everything else is stable (i can game ut2k4 etc)
im using a slk-900u with tornado fan/fan controller for the sake of my eardrums when not gaming.
I'm kinda wary about pushing the any more volts through it untill i can afford some kinda extreem cooling.

Edit: If using a Max3, upgrade to the latest bios and the temps will read 2-3C less, go figure...
