Picked up a Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 XR Di lens to replace my Digital Rebel kit lens... and damn does this put that poor little thing to shame. :)

I haven't had much time to play around with it yet, but here's a sample pic I snapped real quick today.

If you're thinking about picking up a D.Rebel, I'd suggest you save yourself $100 and buy just the body, and pick one of these up instead ($250-$300 used). I would have gone that route in the first place had I known any better.

Nice capture....however, I think I am going to wait and go down the 17-40 or 24-70 route.

That lens looks pretty sharp to me though....nice color.

i think im going to get that lens next, after i get more familiar with my 50mm 1.8

well, in my mind most of the point of the kit lens is the 18mm end.

You arent going to find a lens for $100 that can handle that.

Obviously its not the best lens in the world, but for the money and coverage you get its great.

Me too. I'm loving the lens. Even the bokeh created all the way up to f/5.6. It's so neat. lol

how does it do with macro?

i use the kit lens a lot for doing macro stuff, and it does a very nice job normally...

just currious

Sorry to sound rude, but that is one of the dumbest things I have heard. 28mm on a 1.6x crop camera will give you the same angle of view as a 45mm lens on a 35mm camera. 45mm is almost the standard 50mm which isn't wide at all. The $100 for the kit lens is one of the best $100 you could spend unless you allready had a good lens under 20mm.

I'm not comparing the angle of view between these two lenses.

In my opinion, the color, sharpness, speed, and consistency of this lens exceeds the canon kit lens.

I've taken nearly 2000 pictures with my kit lens - so I feel I know it quite well by now.

I'll post some comparison samples when I get time.

Actually, here's a macro comparison for KevySaysBeNice.

1st pic - Tamron XR Di:

2nd pic - Canon Kit lens

No this is not a "fool proof" comparison (I did this in about 30 seconds) - so I don't want to hear anyone bitching.

The Canon has a closer minimum focus distance of 0.9' compared to the Tamron 1.08'. However, I feel the Tamron is sharper and picks up more detail. Again, thats my opinion - I'm not here to argue with anyone. Look at the pictures and make your own decision. I used the same exact camera settings for each shot with no processing besides cropping.

You said not to get the kit lens. Angle of view is a big part of chosing the right lens. You can only back up so far

thanks for those macros.

i agree (i think...) the kit lens doesnt look quite as nice...

well, for now, i ahve the kit lens, and am happy with it over all, perhaps i will "upgrade" in the future, after my macro lens :)

it doesnt and I will contest to that.

over 50% of my pics had that "blah" look to them (straight out of the camera) with the kit lens but I then tried someone's 50mm (Canon) prime lens and the pics looked much sharper and crisper straight out of the camera.

sure, you cant compare the 18-55 to the 50mm because obviously one's fixed focal and the other isnt but had I known then what I know now, I wouldve just bought the DR body alone and spent the extra $100 on something like the 50mm prime from Canon which is pretty darn cheap IMO.

of course I'm speaking of my past experience with the 300D cuz its been almost eight months since I sold that camera.
