[H] was down for a couple days, and now rolled back a little over two weeks, did another database move happen like the last outages?
 
I was just wondering the same. I missed the outage as I was away all weekend. It seemed very stable before the weekend.
 
Serisouly...these forums have been going down a lot during the past few months. Now a rollback too the third? Whats the deal guys?

edit: And what happened to the amount of time a member has been registered next to members "rank".
 
dont act like you deserve some sort of special treatment, no offence. the money it takes and the time it consumes to run this for us is insane. I dont doubt cliff spent way too many hours trying to fix the DB before rolling it back.
 
Looks like the DB went back to August 3rd.

A forum this big really needs the services of someone who knows what they're doing. I'm not knocking the skills, effort, or intent of the current admins, but it's been made clear time and time again that they're incapable of running the site effectively. We've had, what, about a week or more of downtime this year?

I don't think anybody was asking for special treatment. Just wondering what happened. I spend more time on this forum than any other website, so when there's an outage, I can't help but wonder what happened to my favorite place to be. Ya know what I mean? :)

I second that. It must be tough as hell trying to keep this place running. Bandwidth must get tapped hardcore.
 
Certainly hope this is a temporary issue ... here's to hoping our messages post-August3rd are somewhere safe. :(

It just happened that I come home to build my new computer (went fine, runs awesome) but I wanted to know a few things that I read on [H]. Timing + me FTL. I could only find so much using Google cache, too. :(

Stuff happens, defiantly not the attitude to be taking when this site is free. I know what you're trying to say but you shouldn't complain when it's free, no matter whats wrong because they don't owe you anything.
 
Forum still seems flaky to me also..... I am getting blank pages when I click links and either have to refresh or go "back". I am hoping that everything can be restored as I had some deals going that were all saved in my PM's :(

This place is great and I really dont want to see it die like Warp2Search (www.warp2search.net).
Their forums were down so often, they only get a few posts a day now!

Guys what is the issue, is it finance?

If I were a mod, you'd find yourself embarking on a nice relaxing vacation from the [H]. Saying you aren't knocking anyone but saying they're incapable is pretty idiotic, isn't it? "Hey, no offense, but you're horrible at this."

Regardless of what happened, we know people are currently working [H]ard to get crap back up and running. It happened; yeah, it sucks. It happens more than we all would like it to; yeah it sucks. But we roll with what happened and wait for it to get back to normal.

Oops I meant I agree with him in that it must be hard to keep this place running. As far as special treatment goes then I don't think anyone was asking for it, I just think people want to know wtf happened.

Everyone is a lil concenred and wants to know. I'm sure they will let us know.

I thought things were ok. Certain things like the search were still a tad messed up but I'm sure they're doing all that can be done to keep HF afloat.

I <3 this site and some ppl, like myself, have "donated" a but to the site. If you're concerned about financials even $5 helps. I suggest the lifetime but you would help them out more at $5 a pop ;)

Look, I greatly appreciate their efforts and sacrifices in keeping the forum here. I'm a member and have been for a long time. I love the forum, so don't misinterpret my words.

It's obvious that the current admins are having serious troubles and need additional help. I'd gladly offer my services for free if I thought they'd help.

If the forum has to go to a for-pay mode to keep the uptime remotely acceptable, then I'd pay.

Then I suggest you say what you mean instead of letting your ass speak for you. Saying the staff is having trouble is much different from saying they're incapable. If you appreciate their sacrifices, you should be able to make your own sacrifice and be patient and understanding during downtime.

The last time the forums went down, Steve or Kyle, or someone made a post saying something to the effect of "We don't know what is wrong, so we are seeking help from those who are good with databases".

Having known this, I didn't see his comment as being an ass, as they have stated themselves, that they could use more help in fixing the forums / database.

my post wasnt so much pointing the finger at anyone in specific but more along the lines of anyone who decided screaming at them would get them looked after specifically :p EVERYONE has the same problem... I think I lost something like 30 pm's... not a lot compared to some but I had some conversations going...

I think that I lost like 50+ PM's from various people trying to get deals figured out......this sucks but it happens.
 
I say So what...... Forums sometimes have Database problems, and [H]ard is a very large forum, so it takes a wile to figure stuff out and get back up. Thats all.

Its the way he said it, calling them incapable and saying they don't know what they are doing is being an ass, it's like calling a mentally handicap person a retard, while it may be true you're being an ass calling them a retard to their face.

Why is everyone hating on Kumquat? This is a discussion board, and he is merely expressing his opinion on what he'd like to see as a user. If you don't like it, don't read it. He brings up a good point that the forums are a serious business for the [H]. To have ads which drum up revenue, the forum needs to be up 24/7/365. Sponsors may get leery of paying for advertising that people may or may not see.
With that said, I wish I could help because I love reading these forums and want to see them around for a long while to come.

I thought people knew that this site is FOR PROFIT. How are they making profit? Us... duh. We're looking at the advertisements and paying the money to buy things. This site is ad-driven. This is not a non-profit site. You people act like like Kyle is running the site because he loves us and the world. The truth is, of course, he wants as many users on the forum as possible.

Some of you need to get off Kyle's penis. Seriously. Some of you are blindly defending them for something that should not happen if done professionally. Having a big forum is not an excuse. Anandtech is twice as big as Hardforum and they never have any rollbacks or database errors.

If we don't criticize them, they won't learn. They just need to get better at keeping the forums up and maybe fork the money over to hire a network specialist.
