I have never really messed with this type of tool before and have downloaded several of the reccommended applications but I cannot get it to do what I need. First off, I need a tool that will allow me to see the data coming out of my laptop on my home network. I want to be able to see the passwords, etc. The reason, I have a security application that I am testing and needed to be sure that is encrypts the data coming off of my laptop. I thought the best way would be to run a sniffer on my pc and then check my pop3 email with my laptop. This will send the username/password over clear text if it is not encrypted and should give me garbage if it is encrypted. Thanks for the help.

What's your issue? Are you not able to sniff out the data you need? If you are running on a switched network you will need to use arp poisoning to setup a man in the middle style attack. This is the only way you'll be able to sniff out non-broadcast data on a switched network.

Just run the sniffer on the machine thats sending the data in the first place, instead of complicating it with a 3rd system for no reason.

It will be easiest to just run it on the machine that I am trying to test. Thanks hokatichenci.

if you are good with your netowrking team. They should be able to mirror a port for you ;) Not that hard :)
