Isn't the whole idea of Snapchat the fact that it doesn't save anything? Well, now it has a new feature that allows you to type in a keyword like "boobies" and here come the saved mammaries...errr, memories! Ta-da!

Memories is a new way to save Snaps and Stories on Snapchat. It’s a personal collection of your favorite moments that lives below the Camera screen. Just swipe up from the Camera to open Memories! It’s super easy to find the Snap or Story you’re looking for in just a few seconds by typing keywords like “dog” or “Hawaii” — that way you can spend less time searching and more time enjoying your Memories.

All of this and they still haven't updated their branding. The ghost logo badly needs a refresh from the MS Paint like design that someone put together.
 
Is this something you elect to do or does this mean they've been storing all the snaps this whole time?

in a word.. YES. Like Instagram (and most everything else it seems), it is now being used by people and companies for social media marketing purposes. Podcasters are getting into it big time as a way to self promote hoping to expand their audience. Apparently Snapchat isn't just for horny folks any more.
