SN95G5V3 startup issues: common?

Yeah, so it's almost assumed that I will have problems starting up my Shuttle. I generally leave it on all the time, so it's not a huge problem, but still, quite annoying. Whenever I first turn on my Shuttle, I hear the "roar of death" and it prett much stays roaring until I shut it off (and sometimes the power button just doesn't cut it). Then, once it shuts off, I turn it on again and hear the roar, but only for a couple seconds and then it boots up just fine. I'm curious why it even does this? Another thing, sometimes it takes more than once to actually get it going, I just constantly hear the roar until one lucky time I shut it off and on again, it works. Is this a common problem among this particular model or what?

And also, when the roar of death is going, nothing is really going on. Monitor = blank with the yellow light (instead of the normal blue).

I had a similar problem but it ended up being my Video Card. I too have a SN95g5v3. Same things happened but when I switched to a different video card it never happened again.
 
Interesting, I must admit. Well I'm getting a new video card come Christmas time, so I guess I'll see then.

Yeah I was surprised but the even weirder thing is the video card works fine in any other system. So its not that it was bad, just something about the mobo and vid together caused a weird issue.
 
Mine only does it for the first 3 seconds or so during POST when powered up from scratch. Doesn't do it during reboots from Windows.

Followup question though...is your's running a 800 HT bus (x4) or 1000? (x5)
 
Sorry, mine does exactly the same as your does: When I'm powering up from having it completely off (and not even that, but more so from being unplugged, which happens more than you think because I LAN often, hence the SFF in the first place). When I restart Windows it's fine, etc. But the initial powerup is a killer, and I get especially worried when I turn it off and on and it still won't POST.

Explain yourself. I'm not a noob to computer, but I am unfamilar with what you are talking about (I feel belittled ;) )

Okay, I was in my BIOS (for another issue actually) and I'm doing that HT thing at 5x.

HTT (short for HyperTransport) is the speed at which the processor talks to the chipset. For s939, 1GHz is normal; 200MHz is stock for any A64 processor. Note that 200x5=1000. If you overclock at all, you should keep this in mind on your "bus" and HTT multiplier.
