SN45G Problems (No Post)

I've had this box for a while now, and it's worked great. Just the other day I took it to a family friends house, so that I could drop a drive into it and backup some of their stuff before I formatted their drive.

Anyways, the box stops posting at their house, so I forget about it, and move on. I get home, and find it's still doing it. I've now dropped my video card into another box, and it works, I've dropped the ram into another box, and it works. So it comes down to either the motherboard or the cpu, I presume.

Question is, if the CPU was bad, would the motherboard still post? I don't have any hard drives in the box right now, just essentials, all I'm trying to get it to do is POST for me. Basically I'm trying to find out if I need to swap CPU's or not (I'm trying to avoid it if at all possible).

Any help would be appreciated, thanks guys.

Have you adjusted the VDIMM at all? Changing that setting on many SN45Gs (mostly Rev2) causes the motherboard to die.

No, it just randomly happened. It has nothing to do with any bios setting or anything. Something died, randomly. I just need to know if I will still get the machine to POST if the CPU is bad, so I know if it's the motherboard or the CPU.

The whole point of POST (Power On Self Test) is to do a reset, cpu/mem/video/input test before full power up. If the CPU is hosed, then the system will never complete before tthe BIOS requests output to video. Sorry. :(

i would recomend applying a little pressure to the top of the heatsink with your hand.

this worked for me when i first got my shuttle

also try reseating the cpu and resetting the cmos

my shuttle decided to not post for me either.. the only way i could get it to do so was to put the cmos in the clear position, then power it on.. then turn it off. put the cmos back to normal.. then when i start it up it goes fine.. but my problem is more complex.. i have to take the vid card out and use the IGP too.. you don't have an igp though.. for some reason though, the holding down the insert key while powering up trick quit working.. and just putting the cmos jumper on the clear and back doesn't work.. i have to power it on in clear

sorry for typing the same thing twice..

try that first.. then try the cpu..

Perfect. Thank you guys for your help, looks like I've got a bit more work ahead of me.

Sounds silly but try this. Pop the cover and turn it on. Do you see a bright red led glowing? The one for "overheat?" I've seen this a few times now after an "unplug". Pop a 4 pin fan on every fan header and see if it will boot.

If that does it just change the settings in the bios back to the header you use.

Worth a shot, a bunch of the referbs NewEgg had months ago had this same issue.

Got the problem figured out yet? I'm interested in knowing what went wrong just in case I ever run into anything like that with mine.
